Should I let my gyno take both ovaries?

Hello! I had a hysterectomy @ age 28 due to severe endo and scaring... I had a tv us last week and found a 6 cm mass. My gyno thinks is an endometrioma, my question is with hist of PCOS is it best to take the right ovary w/ the endometrioma and also the half of my left that is left at same time to avoid further surgery? I am worried about early menopause being only 30... I have read some great things please help, Thank you

HI there
Glad to hear you're on the mend.  I can sympathize w/ the hot flashes etc.... Ihad a full hysterectomy in May and also had endo everywhere.  I haven't started hormones yet either for the reasons you mention.  Just when I said out loud that the hot flashes weren't too bad they seem to have doubled in number.

They did do it laproscopically, thank god for that. Unfortunately I ended up back in the ER the next day w/ sob and chest pains. They are not sure what it was but I had some fluid on my lungs and my oxygen was around 80. I ended up in the hospital for 2 days on 4 litters when I was finally able to stay @ 95 % on my own. They thought it might be ARDS at the beginning so I was so scared. Thank god for my fiance. I am home and breathing well with no answers to why this happened. They didn't think it had anything to do with anastesia what ever it was is gone and I hope for good!

I'm so sorry you are going through this.  Were they able to operate laporascopically?  I'm glad that at least your pain and problems in this area will be gone.  Hope the menopausal symptoms aren't too bad for you.  I'm only having mild ones since they only took one of my ovaries and am out of balance waiting for other to kick in.  I can't imagine having the full fledge surgery induced menopause.  I hope you can find ways to relax and that your family and friends understand what you are going through.

Take care,
Trudie

Well I had surgery on Thursday.  They had to take it all. There was endo everywhere. My ovaries were stuck to my bowel and my ureters were also stuck in a mass of endo. So I had no choice and the night sweats and hot flashes have begun. They are keeping me off hrt for 6 months to a year to kill all the endo so i guess I have to get used to it. So the worst is over and i guess it could have been a lot worse. I am on the mend now.

Wow, this is a really tough question.  By leaving the half on your left you will still have your own hormones functioning but you will definitely be left at risk for further surgery.  If they operate can they do so laporascopically or do they need to do an open cut?  That will dramatically affect your recovery.  HRT can definitely fill in and they are better at managing it these days.  I think you really need to have a heart to heart with your gyno and ask him if it was his wife or daughter what he would do.  Good luck and please keep us posted.
