ruptured cyst

Last month i went to see my RE hoping to start another round for the iui, but she found 5 cysts, 3 of them were 5mm and the other were small, so she put me on birth control.  last friday i awoke in the middle of the night in so much pain i was in tears.  i couldnt walk and had severe pain under my belly button and on the both sides along with nausea.  i tuffed out the pain and i saw my re this morning and she said that a cyst had ruptured.  she said that there was 300 cc of fluid still in there and she couldnt believe that i had not gone to the ER.  so she gave me more BC pills.  this afternoon i had burning pain in my stomach and cramping.  i called her and she had me go to the med center and take a beta hcg test for a etopic preg. ( i got a neg test last month for my iui) and still waiting for her to call me.  isnt the BC pills suppose to make the cysts smaller and go away?  how bad does it have to be to have them removed?  any advice would help! thanks

The doctor thinks one of my cysts ruptured and caused an infection in my ovaries and other areas nearby. I waited for a couple of weeks before I went in to the hospital and they gave me a CT scan and found the cysts. My doctor put me on three different antibiotics and the pain has been decreasing. Not sure if this helps you, but was wondering if your white blood cell count was high fromn related infection?

I am the one Sandy put a call into for this and I am very sorry I did not get back to you sooner.  I have slept for the last two days. I am having bad chemo brain so please bear with me.
I am confused about a couple of things.  Are you sure the Dr said "3 were 5mm, and the others were small?"  5mm is equal in size to about 5 grains of sugar and if the others were smaller than that, they would have been very hard to see.  Usually cysts are measured in cm.  Normally you won't even feel the effects of a cyst that are under 2-3 cm's or so.
My "cysts" were 11 and 14 cm.  My cellphone is a little under 11cm's long.
I am throwing out these numbers and sizes so you can kind of picture how big or small these sizes are.  Also, you can look on the back of almost any tape measure and it will have cm's.

As far as how bad it has to be for them to be removed, they generally remove anything 5 cm and over that isn't looking like it will go away on it's on.  However, if you are having that much pain, they should go in now and do a laparascopic surgery. They could really see what is going on and drain that fluid. I am very concerned about this 300 cc's of fluid that is what, just floating around in your abdominal cavity?  If it is not draining on its own it needs to be removed.....now.  Cysts fill up with all kinds of stuff I won't go into detail about, but it could cause you a horrible infection and I am surprised that any Dr would basically pat you on the head and send you home with more BC pills.  Yes, BC's should shrink functional cysts pretty quickly.

You need to tell her you want an exploratory surgery.   I hate to recommend to people that they talk to their Drs about surgery, because Drs are supposed to know if you need surgery or not, however, this just doesn't seem to be the case anymore and particularly in your case.  It is a very easy surgery.

Don't let them put you off and tell you it is nothing.  It it not nothing. You don't need any extra problems in that area, especially since you already have some issues.

I hope this helped and I hope it made sense.  I can't tell with my brain not functioning properly today.  Good luck to you and I hope the iui works out.  Please let us know what happens.

Hi,
I put in "a call" to a gal on both forums that has had a lot of experience with the ruptured cyst ... She did drop a line back and said she would check over here after her nap.. She just got through one of her Chemos.. (nothing to do with the ruptured cyst by the way) .. and is exhausted. I'll go through some of the posts and forward to you since she wrote about them just a few weeks ago...

i have not had any of my cysts rupture (praise god)
but ... my gyn onc believes that is a horrible way for them to go and i should consult him immediately ... if a gyn onc thinks this is a bad situation (and he has seen the worst) the RE you are seeing should show more concern ??
bc pills shrink some cysts but some others can only go away with treatment ... if it were me i would get a second opinion from a non interested gynecologist preferrably one with a large OB practice because he would prefer u get the proper treatment so that u can come to him later with the problem that really pays his bills ... pregnancy ;)

best of prayers for u
