Construction noise nearby

I have a rather interesting predicament.

There is some major road construction going within maybe a couple hundred yards from my home.  It involves a lot of drilling.  Well the drilling is not only loud (very loud).  But my home will vibrate (chairs, etc.)

My pain is not tolerating this at all.  I am home all day, pretty much everyday.  I also work from home.   I cannot tolerate earplugs for long since my ears seem to be a sensitive place for my pain to rage as well.  I do try to keep an ipod going all the time, but even if it can drown out the drilling noise it does nothing to help the vibration that runs right through my body.   I have MS nerve pain.  That sends my nerves raging almost worse than the noise.

If that were not enough, the dynamite blasts I believe will start tonight, unless the potential storm delays it.  Some of those will likely be within 200 yards of my home others will be further away.

The drilling itself is causing major vibration.  The dynamite blasting, well I guess I will find out.  There will be four blasts in total on four nights between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m.  They will sound a horn before the blast – so I’ll wake up in time to know it is coming.

I at least know the dynamite blast will only last seconds and hopefully if my pain is intensified by it I will be able to get it calmed down in a relatively short period of time.

The drilling though is intolerable for me now.  This will likely be five days a week for months.   I cannot vacate my home 5 days a week for months it isn’t a reasonable option.

Anyone have any ideas?

Many Thanks!

Is the kind of work you do able to be done from a coffee shop that has internet access?  Is there perhaps a hotel close by that may let you use their internet access and an empty conference room for free or at a nominal price?  Is it any better if you were working from on a bed (I do this often as it allows me to use a heating pad and be comfy with my laptop) as perhaps not having your feet on the floor might be easier?  I so hope you can find a solution.

Thank you for the ideas.  I appreciate it.

I thought I would throw it out and see what ideas people had that maybe I just could not think of.

My neurologist is actually pretty stumped as well.  He simply said - you can't tolerate that.

But, it have been doing the ipod cranked as much as I can to help with the noise.   I also vacate my home for at least a couple hours a day - but sometimes that doesn't work out.

First dynamite blast is tonight (3 a.m.) - we'll see how that goes.  At least those will be short and limited to only 4 nights.  If intolerable I can vacate at least for that.

I know that life goes on around us fellow pain sufferers but your situation seems near in tolerable. You can talk to the head of the construction project but I doubt it will do any good. Unfortunately they have a project to complete.

Some good old fashion head phones, the kind that completely engulf the ear may help the noise but it will do nothing to stop the vibrations. I have some great Boise headphones that when I put them on I can hear nothing but the music. You might want to invest in those type of head phones.

Can you spend a few nights a week away from your home? That may at least allow some temporary releif and rest. If you are not sleeping your symptoms may well be even worse.

Is it possible to do some sound proofing in your bedroom? Talk to the ppl at your local hardware store, like Menard's or Home Depot. They may have some easy temporary fixes for you. Again that most likely will not ease the vibrations but it may be worth asking them for some suggestions.

Now might be a good time for weekend get aways. Please let us know how you are doing and if you are able to find any solutions.

Good Luck to You,
~Tuck

I am so sorry your going through this. I really don't know what to tell you. I know with a person in pain would rather be at home well atleast I do so you can't leave everyday. I don't know if you can call the people doing the project to see if anything can be done and ask them if they have any ideas on how you can handle the movement all the time, it is worth a try Or maybve your doctor would have some ideas. I hope it will end soon so you can get some peace.
