Controversial subject! Alcohol and pregnancy!

Now first and foremost Im gathering opinions! Claws in! Lol

Ok, so Im a wine drinker.  I haven't actually had any since I found out I was pregnant.
My doctor told me the last time I was pregnant that a glass of wine with dinner is harmless. She even told me that "light drinking" during pregnancy is fine. But since everyone has a different opinion of what light means they tell you just not to.
No judgement from me, but does anyone indulge in a glass of wine or a beer now and again? I don't mention liquor for obvious reasons lol
Usually the general consensus is "its bad don't do it".  So is smoking but I always see women smoking while pregnant. My doctor said she'd so much rather see someone drink a glass of wine before smoking a cigarette while pregnant. I find this rather confusing!
How do you feel about light drinking in pregnancy?
Im not so much of a wine drinker I cant wait 9mths,I guess. Im running into a problem though ...I haven't told family yet. My family is big on social drinking and I usually never turn down a glass or two.lol they're gonna suspect something soo . Ha ha
Again, I cannot stress enough that Im just curious and this isn't intended to cause fights!

Also with regards to the low IQ as I said b4 with my 1st pregnancy I never touched a drop of alcohol. My eldest son is now 12 & really struggles with school work. He has always found concentration very difficult from an early age. My 2nd pregnancy I drank a couple of times aweek as i also said b4 & my youngest son is now 4 & very bright, very good at sports & He can concentrate well. So tbh I don't think a couple of glasses a week after 12 weeks will hurt! These things happen anyway weather u stick to every guideline or not!! U have to remember these 'rules' r pretty new....my nan who was Irish drank Guinness regualy with her kids all r fine! & my aunts all drank wine with their kids also fine! If u want have a drink then have one just don't go mad have after u have eaten &  sip it! :)

-.- I get the "talk" if my doctor even knows I drank more than 2 cans of soda a week.... and both of them have told me there is no proven amount of alcohol that can cause fas, so not too drink.. the way I look at it is would you risk your baby's health even if there's only a 1% chance the baby could obtain problems.? I love red wine, and mixed drinks before I got pregnant it was a every night thing, helped me sleep but when I found out I was pregnant I stopped. I just want her to be as healthy as possible

No one is absolutely sure what amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy. I myself would never even take a sip. The way i see it is what if something where to come out wrong with my baby. I dont think id be able to live with myself knowing i could of caused an abnormality to my child.

I've heard its fine to have a glass of wine 3-4 times a week red is better or a bottle of real ale or Guinness over larger.....but its best not to have it in the first trimester as this is wen ur baby's heart & brain r developing....I didt touch a drop with my 1st. my 2nd I drank a glass of red around 2ce week  or sometimes saved up my 2glasses for a Fri night if I was out with friends....but this time I've not had any yet as I don't want it! But if I do fancey a glass I will have one after 12 weeks (I'm 8w+6d)

Ive read and researched the subject. For instance I hear in europe its not uncommon to be told a glass of wine or a beer while pregnant isnt going to do harm and can be recommended to wind down and relax. Of course there is the other arguments about fas. I think everyones body is different. I take a sip of wine or a sip of beer from time to time just to taste but I generally dont drink a glass or can because Im paranoid what could go wrong. And it took me 4 years to have this baby, Im scared of what could go wrong alot. But I mean do what you feel. There's research upon research that argues both sides to this very well but in the end since were all different I dont know what to trust.  So go with your gut and what you feel comfortable with.

I have 2 adopted brothers who have fetal alcohol syndrome and so I have been around a lot of people who have similar problems and I just think a drink even once during pregnancy isn't worth putting your baby at risk for something like that. I honestly can't imagine my child being born with a problem...you would always think "did the alcohol I consumed while pregnant cause my baby's problems?" It is worth the wait to ensure the health of your baby and your own peace of mind. At least you know it wasn't something you did if something happens to go wrong. Just my opinion among many others, though.

I would be careful no matter what. The level of light drinking is different in each person. I've worked with a lot of children affected by FAS, and it is heartbreaking. I would listen to your doctor, but be careful.

even the smallest amount of alcohol can cause fetal alcohol syndrome. drink at ur own risk, it's ur baby you will effect!

One glass of wine isnt going to cause any harm... U cant get fas from a glass every now and then... Fas is for alchoholics that cant quit while prego. I have only had one glass this pregnancy but i dont really enjoy drinking anyways.

I've had three children with 3 different doctors and have always been told that no amount is safe. I've also cared for children with FAS and I would never risk it. 9 months is such a short time in the grand scheme of things and to me it seems selfish. Also the effects of drinking during pregnancy don't have to be extreme. They can be something minor like a slightly lower IQ or added difficulty learning. I personal don't want to wonder would my child be having an easier time in school if only I hadn't had that drink.

Pregnancy is a great opportunity to detox and learn other stress reducing techniques. I know women who have had a light beer or small glass of wine with dinner while pregnant and their babies are fine. Ive also met children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and it's so sad... My personal opinion is what's the point in risking it when it's unnecessary.

I was having company and needed to go to the L.C.B.O to entertain, but was too scared that I would look like a pregnant wino, so that tells you my answer. Lol

I'm glad this question was proposed. Although I am not 25+ I find this forum to be a lot more helpful for me. I will be turning 21 next month and I want to have a glass of wine. I will be 18.5 weeks so all of my baby's vital organ have developed just maturing. What do you all suggest?

I'm planning on having a glass of watered down wine at christmas because I'll be pregnant then and everyone else will be drinking. But otherwise I stay away from alcohol while pregnant.

From the research and studies I've read. It says there is no certainty of how much alcohol that causes fetal alcohol syndrome. I would just be careful. I don't drink and haven't in quite a few years.

All I can really say is your doctor knows best.

You can buy alcohol free wine and alcohol free lager, its in the alcohol aisles but you can buy it. I had a couple drinks when i was in early stages of pregnancy but purely because i didn't know until i was almost 12 weeks. after i found outing didn't drink. My one exception was with my Christmas dinner when i was about 22w, i had a half glass of rose wine mixed with lemonade to have with my dinner but that's it.

One now and again is ok, but definitely not regular alcohol intake as I've seen the effects of FAS and its awful x

I've seen alcohol free wine in grocery stores and liquor stores called Frē. It comes in a white or red option with a few options in both I think.  I've never tried it.

I have had 3 glasses of wine since I found out I was pregnant (21 +3 today). I will allow myself 1 glass per month as a treat to myself.  Usually a red but have had a sip or two of white instead.  Haven't had any blowback from my family or doctor either.

I was also told a small amount of alcohol is okay, but personally I completely cut it out.
