Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism, but normal blood work

I am a 35 year old woman and I have been on Synthroid 88 MCG since I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was 22. My dose has always been the same and I have felt just fine on it for the past 13 years now. About 6 weeks ago (around January the 20th) I came down with influenza. I had the chills, muscle aches, fatigue and a high fever for about 5 days. My fever stayed around 101 and 102.8. The night my fever broke it spiked really high and I took tylenol and then felt very weak and shaky (I did not exceed the dose limit for a 24 hour period). The next day I felt better but about 2 days after my fever broke I started having heart palpitations, insomnia, diarrhea and very bad anixety. I didn't think about my thyroid medicine at all, but I was so tired from the flu I was about 3 days late picking up my refill (so I didn't take it for 3 days). I noticed I started feeling better; the heart palpitations and everything stopped. I just figured it was something from the flu and forgot about it, but when I picked up my refill and took my pill it all came back. That lasted for about 2 weeks until I got in to see my doctor and he checked my blood work (TSH, etc). He called me a week after they drew my blood and said my blood work was normal and everything looked fine. Well, during the week I was waiting to hear from him I stopped taking my Synthroid and all the problems went away. No anxiety, no diarrhea, no heart palpitations, nothing.
When I told him that, he said to only take 1/2 my pill for a week and see if I felt better because he said I cannot go without my medicine. So I tried 1/2 a pill and all the problems started again, but now in addition I have chest pains and my face flushes and gets very hot. Next I tried a quarter of a pill for 2 days and the same things happen. My heat beat feels very strange and I have palpitations, my face is hot and red, my hands tremble, I have diarrhea, insomnia and chest pains. When I stop taking the pill within about 24-36 hours all of this stops and does not come back unless I start taking the Synthroid again. I also tried the generic brand and the same thing happnes.
How can my blood work say I'm normal, but when I take my medicine I feel so bad that it scares me? I have no idea if my bout with influenza has anything to do with this, but I thought it strange that before I got sick with the flu I was fine on my medicine and now I am not. I feel very concerned and even though I will be going back to my doctor, I am desparate for information because I don't understand what is happening. The chest pains frighten me and I will not take my Synthroid anymore.
Any information would be greatly appreciated and I want to say thanks for taking the time to read my question.
