Drug Interactions

Hello,
I have just started taking LEVOTHYROXINE for low thyroid and now my doctor wants me to take Prozac. I am also on an oral birth control pill. Will there be any bad reactions to these 3 drugs being taken together? Any advice would be appreciated.

There is alot of information on mixing birth control with thyroid medication. Simply, most information I came across says taking birth control meds will deplete your thyroid medication and lower thyroid function.

May alter TSH testing.

I have also read similiar sources of information as the MD states in this post on mixing Prozac with hypothyroid medication. It is an alter of brain receptors/ mood stabilizer and may throw off certain levels of other hormones.

I was also on Xanax to relieve my anxiety during my symptomatic time with hypothyroidism. It seems to do the job until my levels stabilized and the anxiety became less noticeable and eventually dissappeared when I reached an optimal level of thyroid medication.

I would look at the birth control pill in relation to your thyroid medication and disease, and also the consequences of mixing the birth control and the Prozac.

You may find that switching birth control will allow for treatment other than Prozac.  

Just a thought, but I think it has merit.

Keeping up on your bloodwork and getting stable at the correct level is the best medicine. If Prozac helps short term, go for it. I'm taking xanax. But getting my vitamin D deficiency corrected helped more than the xanax.

I dont believe so.. but you can go the the fda website they alot of info on meds , I was prescribed prozac and I am on levothyroxine /synthroid as well. I dont believe bc interacts with much .. be sure to take your thyroid meds by it self 1hr before food first thing in the am is best! I would wait at least 3 hrs before taking the others. hope this helps
