FNA tomorrow!

Tomorrow is my FNA in the am and I am scared sh@@ about it. I was sent for this to find out if my nodules are bengin or cancerous. Also they will be biopsying my left lymph node due to enlargement from the thyroid. When my docotor gets the results then he will schedule surgery to remove the left lymph node and right thyroid or possibility all of the thyroid depending on biopsy report. My mother had thyroid cancer when she was 17 years old and had radioactive iodine therapy. Every now and then she will have thyroidititis and be on medication for couple of days and then it will go away. I just turned 32 years old. All this started as they thought that I had infection on my lymph node. I still have enlarged lymph node since July 4th and that's why biopsy will be done. Is having 2 nodules of 2mm and one 4mm in the same area to be concerned of? He is more concerned of the 4mm and lymph node. What are the chances of being cancerous? Will post more tomorrow when I get more info from doc.

As Cheryl said several months ago- if it was your breast would you wait?

Hurthle cells are considered rare- they cannot predict how these cells change or the course in which they change. If it were me I would not want to wait. The hurthle cells were the number 1 reason my surgeon had me in surgery within 2 wks. The fact that you had alot of colloid was a positive sign.
I'm sorry I cannot answer any further other than to explain what I learned during my treatment.

Hope this helped in a tiny way.

     Best Wishes & God Bless~

I got a copy of my cytology report and this is what it says:
final diagnoses: consistant with nodular hyperplasia
colloid:abundant,thick and thin
follicular cells:present,in varying sized aggregates and large sheets.
macrophages:moderate,with phagocytic debris
hurthle cells:few
lymphocytes:rare
Can anyone help me understand this report?
I work in the hospital field and ask a friend of mine who works in lab/pathology area about this and she is worried about follicular cells and hurthle cells but more concern about follicular cells. She told me that I should remove my right thyroid as planned and not to wait until 6 months. Is it normal to have a few hurthle cells? Should I be worried? I am waiting from call back from surgical scheduling desk for a date for surgery. Am I making a wrong decision by telling the doctor that I don't want to wait until 6 months down the road due to my strong family history and my symptoms. My mother also asked one of her coworker about this and he said to remove it just to be safe. What should I do?

Did some research and found this:

Hyperplasia (or "hypergenesis") is a general term referring to the proliferation of cells within an organ or tissue beyond that which is ordinarily seen. Hyperplasia may result in the gross enlargement of an organ, the formation of a benign tumor, or may be visible only under a microscope. Hyperplasia is considered to be a physiological response to a specific stimulus, and the cells of a hyperplastic growth remain subject to normal regulatory control mechanisms. This stands in contrast to neoplasia (the process underlying cancer and some benign tumors), in which genetically abnormal cells proliferate in a non-physiological manner which is unresponsive to normal stimuli.

Causes
Hyperplasia may be due to any number of causes, including increased demand, chronic inflammatory response, hormonal dysfunctions, or compensation for damage or disease elsewhere.

Found this on another site:
Hyperplasia is the increase in the number of a cells in a tissue as a consequence of cell division (no cell size increase).  It can occur by itself but usually occurs in combination with an increase in cell size (hypertrophy). A good example of hyperplasia is the adaptive increase in erythrocyte production leading to increased numbers of red cells in individuals living at high altitude.  The low pO2 leads to increased erythropoietin production that stimulates bone marrow erythropoiesis.  A combination of  hyperplasia (cell number) and hypertrophy (cell size) can occur in the smooth muscle of the uterus during pregnancy as a physiological consequence of hormonal action.  Some pathological states are associated with hypertrophy and hyperplasia (to varying degrees).  Examples include:   Prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia; and Thyroid (Graves' disease).

What are hyperplasia cells?  Sorry, this is a new one for me.  Mine were atypical follicular when FNA and totally benign upon biopsy but they found 2 small areas of pap cancer elsewhere in the gland that they never even knew was there.  Fully encapsulated/no lymph node involvement.

I got my results of my FNA today. He said it was hyperplasia cells and that I can wait until 6 months to see if it get bigger and cells change but still not sure if it is hyperplasia until its taken out and have frozen section done. He told me to wait 6 months have ultrasound and if there is change then it has to be taken out being that it might not be hyperplasia. I know my body and my family history and told him that I am not waiting 6 months to find out that it changed into something or cancer so I told him do I have an option to take it out now and he told me yes. The only thing he told me is that if it turns out more than hyperplasia then he has to go back in and take out the left side. When he told me this I felt that he is not sure what it is. Am I right to opt for the right thyroid removal? Should I wait 6 months to find out if it had grown and then take it out? Now I feel guilty for making him taking it out. Why do I fell that way?  Can hyperplasia cells turn into cancer? Is this really concerning or should I wait the 6 months?

Thanks for all your prayers,it really help keep me calm. I had it this morning. It was a little rough and scary at the end. I hurted when they gave me medication to numb the area and when they aspirated. Then all of the sudden my throat decided to swell up and cause breathing problem so I had to stay alittle long to make sure it didn't close up. It was very close of closing up that was the scary part. If it closed up more they were going to call a code and have respiratory come down and put a tube to help me breathe. Thats where all the prayers worked and help me go this hurdle very quickly. I am home resting and possibility of staying home from work tomorrow if I am still swollen and see doctor for follow up from the swelling as they advised me for follow up care. The one is big deeper in my thyroid and possibility pressing on something, that's why I have problems swallowing and clearing my throat alot also loosing my voice.as the radiologist told me and the other two has calsification around it. She was able to get the first three samples at the first biopsy so no other was needed. All three samples were good samples and I should know by Tuesday the results. My radiologist that I had I knew from work and she was great. She also told me that surgery was most likely needed to take out the right side of thyroid and left lymph node. I will post more tomorrow if I know more what's going on. Thanks again for the prayers.

Take a deep breath and it will ok.FNA not so bad and even if it does turn out to be cancer This cancer is soooo very treatable.Besides I cant remember the exact percentage but something like 90 percent of these nodules are benign.

I am sorry that I can't give you any useful info about what you are going through b/c I never had to deal with any of this, thankfully.  But I just wanted you to know that I will be thinking of you and praying for you.  I pray that all will be benign, you'll have the surgery to remove thyroid, and your life will return to normal again.

Do let us know what they find tomorrow.  From reading on here I don't think they usually get the results the same day, do they?  Brain fog right now.

God go with you tomorrow.
