Hyperparathyroidism

I am a 31 yr old female.  I have high blood pressure, I am on Atenolol.  It has come down, but  still runs 140's/90's (it started at 170/110).  My doctor upped the dose to 75mg.  I am also lightheaded and had a positive tilt table test.  I am run down and tired.  They ran all sorts of blood tests--my PTH measured 83.1, then more recently, 95.3.  My Calcium measured 10.3, then 10.1.  My doctor said its nothing, your Calcium has to be 12 or 13 for it to be considered hyperparathyroidism.  He thinks I have a Vitamin D deficiency, and is checking me for that.  Is this right?

OMG-- anytime your calcium is high along with your PTH I would bet my life on Hyperparathyroidism.  The PTH may never go very high if it is benign and most parathyroid tumors or adenomas are.  I had 2 of my Parathyroids removed in 2002.  I almost died because the calcium went so high before I was diagnosed.  I have since found out that the high calcium and elevated PTH should have been a red flag.  It almost put me in a coma.

Go see an endocrinologist - now.

My symptoms - by the time they finally caught it.  I lost my teeth due to calcium and magnesium and phosphorus loss.  My stomach was tore up from the calcium going through it on the way out. I have Osteoporosis- and although it was reversed within a few years of the parathyroidectomy, the calcium caused calcifications of 3 of my heart valves-- I have murmers now.  I have severe osteo arthritus- which they put me on morphine for-- am now trying to wean myself off that.  I got comatose, moody, depressed, could not concentrate, vomiting, you get the picture.   Go see an Endocrinologist before you get more damage.  Here is a great site..

This absolutely should be a concern and your doctor should be taking hyper-para to the next level.

You might find many articles here helpful on the misdiagnosis of this
