I missed the 1st 5 minutes which must be when Dr Singer was on - I have had the feel good thing he talks about but only because I don't go way hyper just a little and I go off the Levoxyl when it happens or else I would be so sick but I think these results are the minority of folks - Mary Shoman's book is good but she so pushes the Armour which I love but had bad luck with because of the hi T3 and when I go a little hyper & combine that w/ the Armour I just about stopped my heart - was playing soccer and couldn't get a pulse because I couldnt count that fast - I just take what I need from all the books and leave the rest - love the book Thyroid Balance - mine is packed away so I don't have author name handy but it is a great book w/ section on vitamins, minerals etc which I have taken for several years - wish more shows would cover Thyroid - I wrote to the View about it but no response -

I agree with Mary Shomon that Dr. Singer needs to get a clue, but I also know that she herself is not as accurate with a lot of her information either. Anybody who has bought her so-called "diet" book will know that. I believe in searching all resources for help but you still need to be cautious about where you look for information. I have found these forums helpful and they have brought many interesting situations to my attention, but I also know that there aren't any medical professionals here and that any info I gather I should take to my (thankfully wonderful) doc to discuss. In the case of Dr. Springer, however, I wonder how many of his current patients saw him on "Oprah" and wondered why they were going to him.

hi dear - yes I believe you because I've had the exact symptoms you mention - Just got my labs back what a shock today I'm slightly hyper and here's my labwork taken oct 12 during a nice hyper phase which lasted 2-3 weeks TSH 19.01 (and I didn't feel 1 bit tired - had racing heart slightly and had that "I love life" feeling - Free T4 .57 range .75 - 1.54 , Low vitamin D level - sending scrip for that in the mail so I don't have to go in again, Total cholesterol 151 Triglyceride 43 , HDL 65, LDL 98 - figure that one out - was a little hypo last 2 days so took my usual dose and today hyper a little and feel great - I'm not complaining at all but surprised my TSH so hi and T4 so low and I feel fabulous - going in for MRI Monday - GravesLady - what could it be - I know doctor will tell me to get TSH back to 10 @ least but I hate to take any Levoxyl when I feel so great because then I speed my behind off - very confusing - do you have any insight?

Show me a study on endorphins and the affects Hyperthyroidism have on them, and show the respect for Mary Shomon that you request for youself.

If you are one in ten, that is one thing. If you are one in ten thousand, he made a stupid remark.

P.S. quotes referring to hyperthyroid symptoms

Sorry about your suffering so bad.

As I always say, we are all different and will experience our thyroid conditions differently.  I am not asking anyone to agree with me. I am saying those were my symptoms which was the reason it took me so long to go to doctors.  I was just feeling too darn well and healthy, regardless of not being able to stop losing weigh to where I was weighing 95 lbs. by treatment.  If any of you expect me to believe in your symptoms, I expect the same from you and to be taken with creditability and acknowledgement. We all need to voice our experience and opinion, so lets do it with respect for each other and our illness.

Issue about the endorphins/libido.  Many thyroidians complain low or lack of libido to be one of their symptoms.  If this is true to fact don't you think the opposite effect could be just as true, that being  over hyper could amo up the libido as well. Well, it can and it does.

"Raging libido" as it has been referred to.  "Also women may behave in a sexually obsessive way." These two quote comes from your famous INTERNET thyroid advocate.

just my 2 cents...Graves lady I usually agree with you...when my Graves was diagnosed, the last thing I felt was like I was in love, I was skinny , tired, tremoring, my heart was not beating right at all, my mind was going going..almost gone, and I was too weak practically to walk to the mail box,...I had energy but it was all in my mind, everytime I tried to do something, I was too weak in my muscles, and sex forget it, it started the racing heart all over again....I too think the doc sounded like an idio

Seriously. I get that positive mental attitude and exercise will contribute to good health. But if you have something physically wrong with you, especially thyroid related, I don't think you can just think or exercise your way out of it. Believe me...I tried because everyone made me think it was all in my head or that I was doing it to myelf. It was such a relief to finally be diagnosed and treated and to know that I was not crazy and people around me were acting like a****h***s. Sorry. Venting. I guess I'm thinking about my family...

Apparently, this show really stirred the pot!  I found an article by Mary Shomon regarding the show:

thyroid.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=thyroid&zu=jones.htm

If you don't read the whole article, I copied a small portion of what her guest doctor had to say about thyroid disease:

"In many women thyroid dysfunction develops because of an energy blockage in the throat region, the result of a lifetime of 'swallowing' words one is aching to say. In the name of preserving harmony, or because these women have learned to live as relatively helpless members of their families or social groups, they have learned to stifle their self-expression....It's no coincidence that so many more women than men have thyroid problems. Thyroid disease is related to expressing your feelings..."

Unbelievable.

I wish all of you could have too.  Besides all that I had a very high energy level.

Dr. Singer was referring to hyperthyroids and said the symptoms were like being in love i.e. fast heart beat, weight loss, etc. OK, maybe he was referring to young love.

And he did mention most of the symptoms of hyperthyroid and hypothyroid. At least give him credit for that.  He'll probably regret the love statement, if he hasn't already.  Even doctors are human.

I'd much rather be hyper than hypo.  Being hypo is where my issues start and it took me 2 years to work though them.

Boy, if there are such symptoms out there to had with Graves'/Hyper GL must be one of the few and far between ones!  Hypohell was NOTHING compared to being hyper.  I really thought I was going to die before I was dx and treated.  Even after being dx I had such horrid symptoms that I thought I would die and my dr put my on strict orders of how little I could do b/c of all the thyroid storms I was having before RAI ablation was completed.

Did not go back and read the article, but if this is all he said about it then shame on him for generalizing what is not the "general" feeling of hyper patients.  That would be the same generalization that all hypers lose weight and all hypos gain weight.  We all know it doesn't work that way.  Since he is such an authority on the subject he should know better than to use a general statement when it comes to any disease.

GL would have traded you Graves' experiences in a hyper heart beat!!!!!

This is such good timing you mention this - I was just riding the best wave having gone slightly hyper so I immediately go off the Levoxyl (and per dr.) and just do everything to stay low and relaxed - and I feel so great - wish I could give some good feeling away to you folks when you're feeling so bad because I know that ride too - waiting for lab results from visit last Friday and going for ultrasound the 29th - scared I feel so good so that must mean something is wrong right? - hope I have a good report card!

I have Graves and when I was hyperthyroid my symptoms were like yours. There were times before I knew what was wrong with me I thought I was going crazy. Not crazy in love unfortunately.

Hyperthyroidism gets the whole system sped up, no argument there.

I would like to see clinical evidence that it stimulates endorphins or one's libedo. Surely if even one in four Grave's patients experience such feelings it is well documented.

Sorry about that.

I don't think I am one of a few.  Many are out there leading a healthy normal lives instead of posting on forums.

I have had a few loves in my life encluding my deceased husband, where I had a natural positive high, a very good feeling.  Love gets the endorphins going as well as the libedo, and so does Hyper/Graves'.

Like I said and have always said, we are not all alike, unfortunately - or - fortunately.

Well then you are one of a few.

When I was hyper, before I was diagnosed with a "slow thyroid" (another brilliant doctor) I was depressed, thought I was having heart problems, and had serious fatigue issues. I lost weight at an alarming rate and had great difficulty controlling my temper.

I have been hyper a dozen times in the last two years. It is Hell.

It wasn't quite like that when I was courting my wife, and my marriage has very seldom inspired such feelings.

Sorry you are having such a  rough issue.

If I had a man in my life at the time before going to doctor and being diagnosed with Hyper/Graves',
I would say it was like being in love. I had a natural positive high, life was beautiful and I was glad to be alive. Even though I lost approx. 50 lbs in 9 month, I felt better and healthier than I ever had in my entire life. I had so much energy I felt as though I could run a 100 miles and back, turn around and run it over again without feeling one bit tired. My mental outlook was great.

If it wasn't just like love, it was the next best thing.

We are not all alike and will not have the same symptoms - hyper's or hypo's.
These two conditions are not the same for everyone. We all are different and unique, even when it comes to health conditions. Please recognize us who do not fall in your category of symptoms, but do have thyroid condition, we are out there.

Dr. Singer was right on, per my situation.

I don't care if he's the greatest doctor since Hippocrates, to compare hyperthyroidism with being in love is idiotic.  Comments like his belittle the serious of hyperthyroidism and all thyroid disorders.  Doctors like him are why people call thyca the "good cancer".  He may be a brilliant doctor, but he's a lousy communicator.

I'd like to feel like I'm in love!!
Seriously though when I started taking 25mcg of synthroid I felt terrific. Great sleep, woke up feeling refreshed. Now I'm up t o 50mcg and can't get out of bed in the morning. I literally yawn about 100 times a day! It's ridiculous. but I have noticed other symptoms dissipating, not so cold, not so bloated. So thats good - hope it continues to improve.

He may be brilliant, but that one comment makes him sound like a fool.

I won't condemn the man for one sentence plucked out of an interview, but he used a terrible analogy.

Peter Singer of the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine and  top guy in the thyroid field. He even served as President of the American Thyroid Association (ATA). and you call him, quote - Some idiot doctor in California - unquote.  Watch your language, I'm from California. USC is one of the top universities, period.

Go read my comments, Dr. Singer is not so far off.

You guys have got to read the comment made in an article posted in the Baltimore Sun on October 4th about Oprah's thyroid problem.  Some idiot doctor in California compares hyperthyroidism to like being in love.  Here's the link so you can read the article yourselves.  Mary Shomon even comments.
