congenital hypothyroidism

My 2 year old was diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism at birth. She started Synthroid at 5 days of life.  Her personality is disturbing- she has severe mood swings and just seems off.  I would to get information and advice from other parents/physicians.  Thanks

Thanks for your input.  She is acutally mellowing out a bit- she just turned 2 and I think due to her diagnoses I am analyzing every tantrum.....she is starting to be able to communicate better and it seems to be lessening.....I have a history of depression and I will definitely be watching all 3 of my kids closesly........How did your daughter act as a 2 year old?  Thanks.  Do you think the thyroid medication affects your daughter in strange ways?

You might want to seek out a pediatric psychiatrist to see if other conditions are lurking.   My daughter seemed "off" since birth too and I took her to doctor after doctor.  It wasn't until she was 12 that she was finally diagnosed, and treated, for bipolar disorder.   There are many on this forum who experience depression or bipolar disorder along with their thyroid conditions.

My daughter, as I said in other posts, had her thyroid removed when she was 16 (my sisters and I had cancer/precancer).  After her thyroid was removed (precancerous, Hashi's, and a nodule compressing her jugular) her personality mellowed out but she still exhibits a bipolar issues.

Worth exploring - the younger children receive treatment the better the outcome.

Wow!   I guess antibodies would not come into question since she was born without a thyroid gland.  They can not attack something that is not there.  I wish I could be of more help, but this one is new to me.  I'm sorry . . . ask Dr. Lupo back at the forum site.  Maybe he can help.  Good luck.

Hi, thanks for responding.  We check her labs every 1-2 months as she is rapildy growing- her t4 is normal but her TSH is on the high side- it is always a balancing act...The docs have never tested her antibody results...she was born without a thyroid gland- does anyone have experience with this?  Thanks

You need to post her most recent blood tests.  TSH level, T4,T3 and antibody results.  Then we can possibly give out suggestions.
