I'd pursue this further if I were you. Your symptoms aren't terrible, if I interpret correctly, but you do have a few. Hypertension is also a symptom of hyperthyroidism.
I'd want to repeat the test, making sure that frees, rather than totals, were tested this time. I'd also want to have antibody tests since most thyroid disease is autoimmune in nature. Graves' disease is autoimmune hyper, and the test for it is TSI (thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin). Hashimoto's thyroiditis is ultimately hypo, but it can be hyper in early stages. The tests for that are TPOab (thyroid peroxidase antibody) and TGab (thyroglobulin antibody). You have to have both of these to rule out Hashi's.
The specialty that deals with thyroid is endocrinology. However, your PCP could certainly order this further testing to see if you need a referral. Any doctor can treat thyroid if he has an interest and keeps informed...many don't. If you have those tests, you will be much better prepared to decide if you need to find another doctor.
Hi. Thanks very much for the attention you've been giving my query.
No, i'm not taking any thyroid medicine. What i'm taking regularly is Telmisartan amlodipine besilate 40/5 for my hypertension, one tablet a day, which i take afterr breakfast. I also take Centrum Silver, one tablet a day, after breakfast or after lunch.
I don't have anxiety, hand tremors, or eye problems. I don't have insomnia either.
My T3 and T4 values are very close to the highest normal value. Do you suggest I consult a doctor? What kind of doctor would you suggest I see?
Thank you.
If the labs don't specifically say they're FT3 and FT4, then they're total, and the ranges look like TT3 and TT4 ranges.
Your TT4 is quite high. It's very close to the top of the range. Usually, middles of the range is the guideline.
TT3 is also high in the range.
TSH is the least important of the tests since it's a pituitary hormone, but your TSH is good, which indicates that your pituitary thinks your T3 and T4 levels are good.
Weight loss or inability to gain weight is a hyper symptom, as are palpitations. Any other symptoms? Anxiety, insomnia, hand tremors, eye problems, etc?
If these tests are repeated, you should ask for FT3 and FT4 instead of TT3 and TT4. The total tests tell the total amount of the hormones in your blood. However, much of that is bound by protein and useless to your cells. The free tests tell what is available.
Are you on any other meds or supplements? You are not on thyroid meds, correct?
The reference values are 0.49-2.02 for T3 ELISA, 4.8-12.0 for T4 ELISA, and 0.6-5.0 for TSH ELISA.
There is no indication of the tests being FREE T3 or FREE T4.
I experience occasional palpitations and my weight is low (84 lbs for my 4'11 build), but I don't know if these are symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Thank you.
What are the reference ranges on your T3 and T4, and do they say they are FREE T3 (FT3) and FREE T4 (FT4)?
Do you have symptoms?
