Why do we all seem to have heartburn?

by Liz94, Oct 01, 2008 09:28AM
Just out of curiosity, why do most thyroid patients also suffer from heartburn?  I'm so sick of it and I just don't know what to do anymore.  I'm fine for awhile and then I have it everyday. I just can't bring myself to go on a long term product like Prilosec after reading the negatives. I've been taking "Heartburn MD" which is supposed to be a natural alternative but it's just not working.  My next step is the gastroenterologist but I don't want to do that because I know he'll want to put me on Nexium or something. Why do we all have heartburn?????  Oh and it doesn't matter what I eat, when I eat, how I eat or sleep. I've got heartburn. And serious dry/burning tongue which I've noticed ALWAYS accompanies my heartburn episodes. SICK OF IT.

I didn't know that is where my heartburn came from! Don't have any input other than I can relate. Hope someone can answer your question.

Funny you should mention it....  I was hyperthyroid and had heartburn for years with it.  Now that I'm back to normal after thyroid surgery, I still have terrible heartburn.  There's got to be a connection.

I have heartburn and it is caused by celiac disease which is gluten intolerant.  I take papaya enzymes.  They are a digestive enzyme and it really helps to take away the pain.   You could be gluten intolerant.  It is a simple blood test.  You can buy the papaya enzymes in any health food store.   linda

I forgot to tell you that when you sleep, sleep on your right side and you will not get it at night.  The nutritionist tolld me this.  It has something to do with where  the esophogus enters the stomach.  It really works.  The minute I turn on my left side the heartburn stops.    hope this helps.   lol linda
