my thyroid nodules are having surgery

Okay I have my tests back as I had ten biopsies of my thyroid nodules. I have a 4.5 in left and a 4.7 in the right plus smaller ones. A year ago the right was 1.7 and left was non existant. Results for right side are: a reprominent Hurthe cell proliferation with blood. Focal aggregates of macrophage are present indicating possible focal cystic degeneration. Suggestion of capillary proliferation in background. Cytologic indings are suggestive of a hurthle cell neoplasm of the thyroid.
Left is: contains more heterogeneous elements including collois, follicular cells, hurthle cells and small fragments of fibrous tissue. cytologic finding are more consistent with colloid nodular goiter, although focal, concurrnt hurthle cell neoplastic process cannot be completely excluded.
I am referrred to a surgeon as Dr says it is probably cancer and needs surgery to take out thyroid. Can anyone else tell me if this is all it says. Wish it was in terms we could understand. Do you know if this is an overnight stay, what effects on the voice does it have. Does this cure the cancer. She also told me today my mammogram of last week showed something in both breasts, I have to have more mammograms, ultrasound and maybe biopsy. Now I am worried it has travelled from my neck down. I had a surgery in 2002 that took my voice for three months so am worried, it was anterior disc fusion with plate and screws in back of my neck.

Hi, thanks for commenting, makes me feel a little better. Yes, I did kind of doctor it trying to find out what all the words met but you end up in a complicated mess trying to figure out what all the words mean put together. Yes I will tell him to take the whole thing, why part and then later have to do it again. I would not want that.
Oh three days in the hospital sounds worse than the surgery, ugh. I hate hospitals. I had back surgery one time and also an anterior disc surgery and was in for a few days and absolutely hated it. No sleep, weird noises all night, other patients yelling, yucky smells. Hopefully I get out the same day? Oh well, not looking forward to any of it. Strange we both have the breast lumps. Yes mine are lumpy to start with as well but with all the changes since last February have me worried. How was your pain level after, did you take pain meds at all, for how long, how is your scar healing, how long is the scar? Thanks again, have a good one.

i have just been dianosed with thyroid cancer and am at the other side of surgery.

the reason why they put results in such complicated terms not simplistically is so that patients dont go home and make their own dianosis, as many try to and then worry themselves about having somthing. take it easy and let the doctor discuss it with you, the internet is a fantastic place for mix up's and all of a sudden many people become doctors!

the surgery you may recieve is a total thyroidectomy, where they take the whole thyroid and they will do this if they suspect cancer. my doctor gave me a choice of half the thyroid and then the other half if it turns out to be cancer or the whole lot in one go. i chose the whole lot and was in hospital for 3 days. they give you a few blood tests to see if your calcium levels drop and if they do, you may be in for a tad longer.
there is a chance with any throat surgery that your vocal chords are damaged but i have had only a very minor change in voice.

i also had 2 breast lumps removed 1 year ago as thye were "atypical" but they were not cancerous. then after the thyroid cancer was diagnosed i freaked out thinking that they misdiagnosed the breast lumps and the cancer had come from there. it wasnt the case, just coincidence. as i have been told "some people are just lumpy". your doctor will check im sure.

IF it is cancer then you will most likely have radiotherapy via a capsule/injection and stay in hospital for 3 days as you pee the toxins out. this happens about 6 weeks post surgery.

remeber that thyroid cancer is very treatable and does not involve alot of the scary 'cancer things' that other cancers do. talk to your doctor and try not to stress.

best of luck
