Microcytic anemia, normal iron levels

by scribblerr, Oct 27, 2007 01:59AM
I just received three units of blood because my hemoglobin count was at 6, post transfusion it got almost to 8. I won't be able to see the hematologist for another week, but my GP's referral says "marked microcytic anemia, normal iron studies."

He said something about having me tested for Thalessemia, I know this is a genetic blood disorder, but isn't it only diagnosed in babies and children? I'm 45, and I was under the impression that few patients with this disorder make it past early adulthood.

Does anyone know what else this could be?
