Why do I have loose stools

by tatty22, Feb 07, 2009 11:12PM
Five years ago I had my gallbladder removed. The stones removed were like gravel. Four days after removal I suffered two bouts of  painful, nauseating gallbladder pain similar to what I had experienced before removal of the gall bladder. My Doctor said it was probably stones decending from the liver and passing through the duct and I should start eating normally to get my liver working properly again. I hadn't been eating a lot as I didn't want to experience anymore pain. I was referred to a specialist Gastroenterologist who ordered an imaging procedure, where the bilary ducts were examined. The report indicated the possibility of a  stone lodged in lower end of the common bile duct. The Gastroenterologist wasn't convinced of this and advised me to beware of any severe pain in my abdomen and to report straight back to him if this should occur. Something to do with a blockage to the Pancreas. Nothing like this has occured. The blood tests were normal.
Scince then I have experienced one milder bout of "gall bladder pain", reflux and flatulence have also decreased to some extent. My problem now is that ever scince gall bladder removal I have experienced  loose stools. I may go to the toilet 3-4 times within 10 minutes. I am not incontinent, but there is a real sense of urgency. On occasions I have: passed a greenish coloured liquid with hardly any stool present; more often than not the stools are not of a solid consistency and "float"; twice recently they appear to be frothy; I do have days where the stools have a normal consistency and colour.
My Doctor does not know why I have this problem except to say it some times happens to those who have had their gall bladders removed. Is there some dietry modification that would help.I would appreciate any advice that would assist in correcting this problem.

Hello,
The symptoms can be due to infection of the intestines(giardia and salmonella) or irritable bowel syndrome. As gall bladder removal has been done,so gall bladder disease has been ruled out.I sincerely advise you to consult a gastroenterologist and get ultrasound abdomen and stool examination done.
Hope this information helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional queries.
