When that happens to me, it usually starts out as a cold. Then I end up coughing up the guck for a couple months. I think it turns into a sinus infection or something. With me, I usually can't stop coughing until I cough something up (I call it a slime ball). If this sounds like what you have, try to mix one half red wine vinegar and one half honey. Drink one tablespoon every hour for a couple days. Should help clear it up.
