racing & thumping heart

by Emerldstars, May 13, 2009 01:11AM
For about the last month or two and on and off during the day I have been having this odd feeling in my chest, the best way to describe it is it kind of feels like my heart is racing, it can last up to about 30mins each time it happens and I always notice it because it feels like my chest has this dull thump. sometimes when I put my hand on my heart I can feel it pumping hard. I am 27 yrs old I did have high coestrol the last time I had it tested about 6months ago (was about 6, though I do have a family history) I am on  anxiety and depression medication and have been on them for about 12mths now, I have booked into see my docoter at the end of the week but am worried and would like to get at least some idea.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
You must get a 12 lead EKG. Not scaring you, but this is a precautionary step. Also ask your doctor if any of your medicines are causing a racing heart as a side effect. It can also be a case of anxiety. Anemia and low blood pressure can also give a feeling of heart racing. Also repeat your lipid profile. The other possibility is GERD. Omeprazole is a good drug to combat this. Along with it you can try over the counter antacids. However I would recommend you see a doctor and take medication under a doctor’s supervision. Avoid heavy meals. Avoid too much of caffeine, tea, fried food and drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic fuzzy ones. Avoid heavy exercises within 4 hours of a heavy meal. Raise the head end of the bed by pillows to 30 degrees. Go to bed at least 2 hours after food.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
