Frequent urination, lower back pain, blood in urinalysis but no infection. What could it be?

I am a 29 year old female and in good health.  I went to my GP in the beginning of the month for what I thought was a UTI.  She did a urinalysis which came back with blood in the urine and high white blood cell count so she put me on Macrobid.  Several days later I received the results saying that I do not have an infection.  I finished off the Macrobid and went to my Gyno where they did a pap and a pelvic exam along with another urinalysis.  This one came back with no white blood cells but still had blood.  I went back to my GP and had yet another urinalysis done, same thing, blood in urine but no white blood cells.  I spoke with a Urologist who said it may be Urethritis and to mention that to my GP.  My GP but me on Augmentin.  I will be finished with my Augmentin today and it seemed to get better for a day or so but now I am urinating every hour as before and still have pains in my lower back.  I have yet another urinalysis on Saturday to see if the blood is gone.  If it is not, any suggestions on what it may be?  I do drink alot of water, close to a gallon a day, but that does not explain the blood in my urine.  The blood is not visible to me, only in the urinalysis.  Before I spend money on yet another physician that tells me the same thing, I would like to get your opinion.  Thank you for your time.  Also, just wanted to add that  I am a drinker, probably twice a week, one of the nights pretty heavy.

Hi I am going through the same, went on holiday 8 weeks ago and had cystitis. I took some over the counter medicine and this cleared up, then I started to get extremely painful cramps and like a dull pain in my groin area. I went to the doctors and they did blood, urine and swab tests and they could not see an infection. I then went to the gum clinic and they did tests for all STD'S including HIV and they came back negative. But I had traces of blood in my urine with low white blood cells indicating that there was no infection. I still have the cramp and now it has gone down to my legs.do you think I need to go and see a gyno? I'm worried sick, and nobody seems to know what is wrong. I feel like they think I am making it up or something.

i woke up this morning with lower abdominal pain a few hours later it went to my lower back and when i urinated it seems that the urine has blood. colored reddish or brownish. the lower back pain almost lasted a day.. can you please help me.

I am having symptoms very similar to yours, have a similar relationship, and have gone through many of the same medical tests. I would be quite appreciative if you could update us on your status and if you found out what the issue was

i have more or less a similar problem
i have a one-sided lower back pain and i have a burning sensation when i pee..  and sometime last week i saw a little blood just at the tip of my penis , i have been checked for kidney stones and also stds like clamedyia and gonorrhea  ..which all came back negative
the doctor prescribed me some antibiotics  ( doxyciline and some other for the gonorrhea ) just in case the diagnosis was wrong ... but even after taking the pills .. am pretty much at the same place ..
please please i need to know what it is

i have recently started feeling alot of lower back pain especially on my left side and i have blood in my urine it feels like i have a knot and my menstraul came a few days late but was very light.
i also have an iud that was placed 2 yrs ago. i am wondering if my pain and blood is from kidney stones or my iud.
i also dont drink alot of liquid i find it difficult to do other the 2 cups of coffee and a bottle of water that is all i drink in one day. i also realized that in my urin there are some blood clots. i have an appointment with the doctor on friday. can you please tell me what is wrong with me and if it is serious?

Hi,
   I am a person with the same problems.... I have very painful urination, but I have no infection.  I, too, have been with the same person for quite sometime, and before we dated I had been STD checked in my routine yearly and I had had these problems randomely before thinking they were UTI's.  My doctors were just prescribing medicines, which seemed to work for a day and then the pain would return.  The pain is sooo bad it brings tears to my eyes.  I have had a cystoscopy which showed no irregularities.  The doctor told me he could be of no assistance to me, and he told me to go back to my gyno or primary doctor.  My gyno as well told me he could no longer help me and told me to go back to my family doctor after prescribing several different medications that did not help me at all.  I now have an appt with my general physician, but I am very scared he won't be able to help either and the passing time is killing me.  I can't live with the pain and frequent burning.  Was there any success in your situation?!?

It is true that kidney pains usually cause severe pain during the time they are passing through the ureter. However, some individuals have reported a dull, achy pain associated with kidney stones.

If you are in a committed relationship and monogamous, there is no cause to suspect the STDs I have mentioned in my previous post. The STDs that could have been acquired 3 years back and remain asymptomatic include HSV (herpes), HIV, and HPV (genital warts).

Anxiety can cause bowel and bladder disturbances associated with stress. Relaxation techniques and low-dose antidepressants can help manage acute attacks.

Some studies have reported the deficiency of serotonin in the brain as being implicated for a host of anxiety-, fear-, and sexual function-related conditions. Supplementation of your diet with omega-3 fatty acids and DHA (fish liver oil supplements) will help restore normal levels of serotonin (neurotransmitter) in the brain and will help reduce anxiety while improving immunity and health.

Thank you for your response.  I am making an appointment today with an Internist and I also have another Urinalysis on tomorrow morning to see if there is still blood.  I had thought it may be a kidney stone also but the pain in my lower back is achy, almost like cramps, and is very minimal and is not present at all times.  I have spoke to people with kidney stones and they said it was excruciating.  

Also, I have had the same partner for 3 years.  We are both faithful without a doubt.  Could one of us got an STD from over 3 years ago and went without knowing and it show up now?  

I do have very high anxiety and with that brings back, neck, and shoulder pain.  I have also read that anxiety can cause frequent urination.  Could it also cause blood in the urine?  

Other than the frequent urination and the crampy feeling in my back, I have no other symptoms.  

Hopefully I will get a blood test at the Internist and rule out the worst.  Do you think I need to see a Urologist?  Thank you for your time.

Hi,

Causes other than a UTI than can cause blood in urine include, kidney stones, underlying kidney disease, STDs that are not detected on routine urinalysis (chlamydia and mycoplasma infections), increased blood pressure, exercise-induced bleeding, general bleeding disorders, etc.

Kidney stones up to 5 mm in size can pass through the urinary tract, though with significant discomfort. If the stone is blocking some part of the outlet of the kidney or the ureter, it will cause obstruction and backflow of urine. The pressure effects of such obstruction will cause significant damage to the kidney and this will be further complicated if there is an infection. A jagged stone stuck in the ureters can cause significant trauma to the mucosa and can cause blood to appear in urine.

Underlyng kidney disease will also cause microscopic quantities of blood in urine. A blood test to check for the kidney function and general blood parameters such as RBC and WBC count will indicate whether the kidneys are infected and whether your problem is due to infection or some other cause. The pain in the lower back is especially indicative of a kidney problem. Additionally, it would be best to have the two abovementioned STDs ruled out as well.

Other possibilities include interstitial cystitis.

Ensure that you keep fluid intake over 2000 ml per day and avoid irritants such as caffeine, alcohol, pepper, etc. Do increase intake of vitamins A, B, C, and K as they increase the body's immunity to infection.
