I had a double bypass at age 54 when I was in very good physical condition. I noticed after climbing a flight or two of steps after 4 to 6 weeks my legs were unusually fatigued. I thought it may have been associated with a low hematocrit, as I was down a lot from the surgery and was never transfused. I was feeling pretty good at 12 weeks but continued to improved measurably for more than a year. Looking back, I think the surgery itself is a lot more of an insult to the body than you might think.

A vein was taken from my inner thigh, I'm not sure if that supplied all of the bypass or not.

Did your doctor use veins from your leg or chest wall?

Hi Chris,

Give yourself two months to feel better.  I colleague of mine who is only 35 years old under went open heart surgery last year.  It took him 8 weeks before he started feeling like himself again -- and he was a spring chicken if you know what I am saying.

If you are having muscle aches, it may be worth asking your doctor to do a blood test for your muscle enzymes.  You have probably heard that statins can cause muscle break down in rare patients.

I hope this helps.
