The problem here is social. What she does in her home she might do outside as well, and in that situation it would draw unnecessary attention. I would put on my prune face and tell her that ladies did not do that. In other words, I would let her know in no uncertain terms that what she was doing was unacceptable. I would add no further explanation.

I know of a case that was blown out of proportion by a teacher who who determined the girl had deep psychological problems.

As stated yes this is fairly common. it is important though to make sure that kids know that no one else should do this to them and if that happens they need to come and tell you no matter what.

As stated above if other issues come along with it like bed wetting, or other potty issues, bath time issues, not wanting anyone to see them or being too open about people seeing them Changes from their norm it may be a good idea to speak to them as well as see a doctor to be safe

Sorry -- I can not stop laughing at what you said, TEKO.

"I bet you did it, too"

I know you meant nothing humorous in your words, but OH MY GOD I can not stop laughing right now.

I had three daughters and yes, this is fairly normal for this age group. Does not mean anything other than it feels good so why not do it. I bet you did it too.

Middle Childhood (5-8):
Some children in this age range will occasionally and consciously masturbate for pleasure. This behavior is not cause for concern provided it is not excessive or compulsive in terms of frequency and is done in private. However, it should be noted that frequent masturbation by a child in the 5 to 8 age range or inappropriate public displays of sexual behavior (one example is exposing herself to a complete stranger) may be an indication of possible sexual abuse.

Common Behaviors:
Occasional masturbation. For some children at this age, masturbation may begin to take on a pleasure oriented rather than relaxation focus, which is seen in in early childhood 2-5.

Concerns:
Signs that a child may have been sexually abused or exploited (e.g., physical trauma to the genital area, sexually related acting out behavior***)
Unable to adopt basic social conventions related to nudity, privacy, and respect for others in social relationships.

*** Examples of sexually related acting out behaviors

Any sexual behaviors that involve children four or more years apart

Different sexual behaviors displayed on a daily basis

Sexual behaviors that causes emotional or physical pain

Sexual behaviors that involves coercion, in other words use of force or intimidation to obtain compliance against the will of another

Sexual behaviors associated with physical aggression
