Gonna be more difficult than I thought

Today was supposed to be day 1 for me....didn't make it!  Did not expect the cravings to be so bad and was not mentally up for the challenge.  Guess I try again tomorrow.  What should I expect the first few days?  I know my mind/body is going to play tricks on me but If I knew in advance it might make it easier for me.  How many efforts did it take before you were able to quit?  I do have a medical reason for taking these things but I'm wanting to see if I can do without them.

I agree. For various reasons (mostly pain) I was on various pills and the only way for me to get off was slow. I was told by a doctor on here to try 25mg ev 3 days or so. Someone said 5 mgs ev 3 days. Whatever you are comfortable with as long as you are going down. You'll know. I write it on my calendar to see the progresss for encouragement. If I feel sick, I just take a little more and don't beat myself up for it and then resume.

Hope this helps and I wish u the best. I am detoxing also and in my experience, depending the length you were on and quanity, it has taken 3 weeks to 1- 1 1/2 months.

With the ultram, even after being off, for a few weeks I was depressed. If you really want to do it, you will.

I'm sure you'll be able to get through the day today. I think you psyched yourself out yesterday when you made your first attempt. I know how that is because it happens all the time, so don't get yourself worked up over nothing. I hope you stay online for a little while today and let us know how everything goes for you!

I should have mentioned that I'm taking 20-30mgs a day of Lortab.  Been doing this for almost 4 years.  While I have NEVER increased my doesage or ran out early I do know that I am addicted to them.  I've read other posts of people that were on MUCH higher doseages and have successfully quit going cold turkey...I am very impressed.  Hopefully I can get through today.

when someone is ready..like really ready...seems they have more of a chance..u may not have hit ur bottom yet..but u will...giving in on the first day means u had pills around/in ur face...cardinal rule of successful detox is not keeping pills in ur face...when u can let go of the power they hold over u..u will win..until then u can just keep trying..never ever give up

If it's one thing that scared me from getting off the pills, it was whether I was going to die or not. You definately will not die from them, so try not to think about that when you do decide to stop taking the pills all together. Lack of sleep was one of the worse things for me along with diarreah. I was in and out of the bathroom more in two days than I was within the last year, and I'm a regular kind of gal, if you know what I mean. [Insert my dry humor here, please...]

You definately need to keep strong through this time, but don't expect the worse of the worse to happen to you. This is not only a physical aspect of life you're about to face, but a mental one as well. If you psyche yourself and get to riled up and scared about what you may or may not go through, then you'll never get through it. Post as much as you possibly can here on the forums, as it will become youer saving grace. Getting your mind off of what's going on really helped me and a lot of other people that I've talked back and forth with here on the site as well. Bananas can help with the RLS and so do heating pads and hot hot hot showers and/or baths -- especially right before you try and go to sleep at night. Don't be surprised or scared if you hardly sleep. I got SOME sleep, but this was, like I said, the worst part of it all that I had to go through. There were times that I felt like I was running purely on adrenaline and it worked me up to a frenzy to the point where I made it worse for myself when it wasn't as bad as what I thought it was at the time.

Try to relax and stay headstrong through all of this. Nothing negative can come from getting off of the pills all together. You're going to chuckle at yourself when it's all said and done with -- trust me.

I'm sorry I'm unfamiliar with what you are taking.  In my opinion, everyone pretty much goes through the same signs and symptoms, but that everyone has them to different degrees and duration, depending entirely on what you were taking, how much you were taking, and for how long you were taking it.

Also, IMO, it CAN make it easier to know what to expect beforehand.  You have to be careful though not to freak yourself out.

I took took medication for a medical reason, and obviously, we're talkin' about pain here...well, at least for me anyway.  You should know that withdrawing will cause an increase in pain.  Some of the other s/s are:  diarrhea, sneezing, nausea, lack of appetite, restlessness, sleeplessness (they are different), parasthesias in the limbs, vomiting, anxiety, stomach pain/burning, flu-like symptoms (body aches).  I may have missed some, and I'm sure someone will let ya know if I did.  Some people are driven nuts by the restless leg-type stuff, while others it's the pain or anxiety, and sleeplessness.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that it all will pass, however long or short it's duration.  You need to have a strong will and desire to get through it, and in my opinion, support.  Knowing you're not going to die from it, despite how you may feel, is pretty important too, because I know a few of us have had chest pains and anxiety to the point we felt like we could be having a heart attack.
Knowing all of this can be scary, but it also gives one a chance to prepare for the s/s and know what we're going to do in our moment of weakness.  You can take Immodium for the diarrhea.  Emetrol is good for nausea (although IT is a little nauseatING), Ibuprofen for the aches, heating pads for the aches and RLS, baths for the aches and RLS, talking to someone for the anxiety, and for some, OTC or even Rx's for some of our symptoms.
