How SOON to start tapering from Methadone treatments?

My head is still swimming with questions! My daughter was on methadone treatment almost 3 weeks when it was interrupted with emergency surgery. She was off for 8 days but was on morphine for pain from surgery. She has been back on it for 2 weeks on 35mg dosages mixed with tang (100 ml solution)
She says she is doing well and i have told her not to let them go up! She had been taking oxycotin for about 6 months prior to this. (or so she says)
My question is how soon could she start a slow taper? Is the oxycotin out of her system or will she have cravings for it if she gets off methadone too soon?
It sounds like the sooner she starts tapering and getting off methadone the easier it will be. How soon is too soon???? Is she already highly addicted to the
methadone. I am beginning to think the methadone route wasn't the best, but we knew nothing about her oxy addiction and she took action for help herself.
Now we all need help!!!!   HELP!!!

HI for the most part being on methadone takes away the cravings for the pills but and a big BUT it dosent take away the craving for the high thats a physiological thing and many a methadone pacent has been kicked out of the program for using......if you work the program the way it was intended your getting consoling and going to N/A meetings and learning what it going to take to live drug free .....it is the very way an addict thinks and reasons that has to change to live in recovery.....coming off methadone is a slow tedious process I was on the stuff way to long .....6 1/2yrs and it was a bear getting off if your working with a conslor going to meetings its never to soon to get off the stuff the longer your on the harder the detox and yes for most people methadone is a over kill and you just got yourself into something a lot harder to get off of then your DOC many people think you can beat withdrawals with it....nothing could be farther from the truth ...if she starts coming off now they usually only let you go at 2mg every 2 weeks so its going to be a wile if she is working with her conslor at the clinic weekly and hitting a couple of meetings a week she should be good to go my belief on this drug is the shorter the time and lower the dose the better.....get her on here so we can talk directly to her it will give her confidence to get off the stuff we will also reinforce the need for aftercare to make this work .....I know your new to all this we will do what we can to educate you on the ins and outs I wish you all the best with your daughter just know there is recovery from this but you got to put the work in or you'll be right back to square one....let us know if you have any other questions good luck and God bless.......Gnarly

Hi,

That is something that she will NEED to be mentally prepared for. The Oxy is long out of her system and when she goes through withdrawal, it will be from Methadone. I can tell you that it will be a lengthy and difficult withdrawal.

I think you mentioned yesterday that she was participating in meetings but stopped? That is a shame because she will need help from others who can help her get through this and show her that there is another way. If she has not confronted the issues that drove her to use drugs in the first place, she will have little incentive to stay clean.

I know this is difficult for you and painful to watch your child go through this. I pray for you both.

Please make certain that she is ready before she begins the next leg of her journey.
