How does Clonidone help with addictions ?

Hi All
I'm having withdrawals from effexor anti-depressants it's 6 months and counting I am under a private Dr and he has given
me clonidone, just wondering how it works and wether it sedates you I feel really tired in the morning.
Also got beta-blockers for palpitations, symtoms were going abit better then I'm hormonal and they raise their ugly heads
again. This roller-coaster ride is very scary !!

Double check that dose.  100 mg would be fatal. It is probably 0.1mg

Thankyou  for the warning, I am only taking 1 tablet of 100 mg's I would not alter the dose
without the Dr's say so.
Kind Regards

Clonidine "is not" a sleeping pill" nor is it intended to act as one..I was prescribed that back in August with a "very stern warning" about this drug..

I was told by my physician that the primary function is to lower one's BP  which in the long run will help "re-stabilize one's sleep" by reducing withdrawal associated stress which most people experience especially when going cold turkey.

This drug is to be taken " AS DIRECTED ". Taking more than what your doctor prescribed is not going to make you sleep better....I was told that should a person abuse this drug , they are putting themselve's at high risk of suffering a stroke due to the extreme drop in BP...There's "no joke" about your BP dropping as low as it did by taking more than you were instructed. Thats what the drug does. Drops BP..

I've seen a few people in here that think that they can double their dose without consequence. The only conclusion I can come up with as to the "why" individual's doing this, is they didn't get a proper warning from their Doctor, nor did they read the specific warnings on the sheet supplied by one's pharmacist with the medication..The information brochure which is required by law to be included with the pill bottle..

I'm going to take a minute to quote what my Doctor said :

"""  DO NOT ABUSE THIS MEDICATION UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!.. YOU WILL BE SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR A SEVERE STROKE, LEADING TO DEATH SHOULD YOUR BRAIN BE DEPRIVED OF OXYGEN DUE TO THE LOSS OF OF PROPER BLOOD CIRCULATION TO YOUR BRAIN """"....

I personally hated Clonodine for Methadone WD SX's...They just KNock me out..Not only that, they only seem to work for the first couple days then the real WD kicks in and I ended up taking too much Clonodine and my Blood Pressure Went down - 48/30...No Joke.
Do as your DR Directs - but Do not refrain from keeping in contact with your doctor if the CLonodine isnt working.

Hi & Welcome!

Am I to understand that you have been in withdrawal for 6 months and taking Clonidine this whole time?

I have used it. It's not a cure. It's for blood pressure an helps a little.  Kept my stool hard but still had withdrawal. It helped me but doesn't take away wd. Will still have that. Doesn't make you drowsy either. Only regulates blood pressure which helps stool and eating. I was able to eat suing wd.  But why wd were bad enough I relapsed.

Hi lorrane, welcome to the forum.  Clonidine is typically prescribed for blodd pressure and also for help with opiate withdrawal.  It is an alpha adrenal blocker, so for opiate withdrawal, it helps ease the symptoms of withdrawal and the feeling of jumping out of your skin.  As for withdrawal from an antidrepressant, I am not sure how it would work, but it is prescribed for withdrawal.  It can also make you sleepy as part of the side effects, so that is what you are feeling there.  Best of luck to you,
