Liver Damage & My Story

I was reading all the posts about liver damage from Vics/Norco (acetametiphen). I just got a phone call form hubby stating his Aunt's friend in Illinois was found lying in Apt. for 2 days from too many pain pills!!!!  OMG!  She is alive, but very sick, (liver damage) I'm assuming. I don't have all the details. Apparently 911 (paramedics) took all her meds from the house, the cops were called, who call her multiple doctors!  That's all I know right now. Apparently she has been using pain meds for a long time. Guess it will catch up to us sooner or later.

I too over indulge, but I do have severe chronic neck pain, and have for many years. The last few months I have just been in the worst pain ever, to the point of just breaking down daily and crying. I have no insurance right now, and cannot afford it either,  I take my pain meds, use cold & warm compress constantly when at home, do neck exercises. etc. but it just doesn't ever go away completely. On a scale of 1-10, daily pain is a hard 8. I am not sure at what to do at this point. I had started to see an orthopedic surgeon and had an MRI, then lost insurance, so I never did find out my results of my test.  I am pretty sure I have a pinched nerve, as the pain radiates down my right shoulder and and arm, and also radiates up to the top of my head. I am always twisting my neck trying to crack it to relive the pain. I could go on & on, but I won't bore you anymore.

What does one do?  Stay in chronic pain? Or keeping taking pain pills, to at least try and function daily. I am at a total lost...taking 10 10/325 daily for years. I do keep it at this rate, although I know I could easily take more, but I feel comfort here. I actually need more due my high tolerance, it's doesn't help the pain enough anymore. But it's my comfort zone, that I do need to quit entirely.

My husband is the only one that knows about my pills....until now this is my first time admitting it in a public forum. I have read 1000's of others admitting their pain pills issues. This is my first, and I am scared. I have a 9 year old son, and I want to be around for him. I also need to be out of this chronic pain, I will be 46 in about a week. My body feels like 80 with all this pain. I just need some way to fix this damn neck pain, so I can get off this pills and live a healthy life.  Any Suggestions?   (whewwww, that was long! Sorry, but it feels good to finally let it out, am crying really hard right now. Thanks!

Now the info I found on the net on Liver Damage: (I just copied)

The liver is a unique organ. It is the only organ in the body that is able to regenerate... that is completely repair the damage. With most organs, such as the heart, the damaged tissue is replaced with scar, like on the skin. The liver, however, is able to replace damaged tissue with new cells. An extreme example is a patient who suffers an overdose from Tylenol. In this example up to 50 - 60 percent of the liver cells may be killed within 3 - 4 days. However, if no other complications arise, the patient's liver will repair completely, and a liver biopsy after 30 days will appear completely normal with no signs of damage and no scar. However, the long-term complications of liver disease occur when regeneration is either incomplete or prevented by progressive development of scar tissue within the liver. This occurs when the damaging agent such as a virus, a drug, alcohol, etc., continues to attack the liver and prevents complete regeneration. Once scar tissue has developed it is very difficult to reverse that process. Severe scarring of the liver is the condition known as cirrhosis. The development of cirrhosis indicates late stage liver disease and is usually followed by the onset of complications.

I also have neck pain everyday! My doc at first gave me the same thing! After a while the tylenol was gatting to be way to much so i got straight oxcycodone 5mgs that has no acetaminophen! It was a great blessing at first! My stomach pains and side pains went away in a week! i was so happy! But then I found out you can sniff them so you get a immedite pain relief! and thats when I became a addict! For 2 years NEVER EVER do this! I am now in a suboxone treatment to cope w/ my addiction! Try to talk to your doc about getting something w/ no tylenol in it 99% it will help the worry about all the acetaminophen that will damage your liver! Hope I could help!! Stay strong!! DrewBoy7

Some people who suffer with chronic pain "bite the bullet" periodically and detox to find out what their baseline is for pain. When you have been taking opiates for pain long term you will definitely develope a tolerance. When this happens you will experience rebound pain. Then you not only have to cope with the pain from the condition that led to drug use, you have additional pain caused by the tolerance. This really happens, believe me. I quit opiates 45 days ago after 3 years of use. I graduated up from 5/500 vic to 7.5/750 vic to 10/325 Norco. When I quit using I discovered that the pain from my injuries had not really gotten worse, I was in more pain on the Norco than I am now. So far I'm able to manage with Motrin 500. I am always in pain, but I was always in pain on the Norco too. Taking more of the Norco was a very temporary fix for me. We're talkin' weeks on an increased dose and I was back where I had been. More turned out not to be better, just MORE.

You can always go back to the medication if you find out you cannot bear the pain at all without it. Just something to think about. If you are concerned about cirrohosis it might be worth a try. Ultimately we are all different and have to do what we know is best for ourselves. I hope that you find a solution that gives you some peace of mind. Best wishes.

if a dr is prescribing u 5000 mgs of tylenol a day..which is in many hydros like lortab etc..some do not have this amt...u really need to look at the amt of tylenol u r taking..anyway if someone needs 100 mgs of hydro a day then they shoulda been switched to a med containing little or no tylenol a long time ago...r u getting these/10o mgs a day from a dr??  cos that is a bit scary....if pain control is an issue long term then hydros is not the normal route..but really no narcotic is cos of tolerence...keep posting
