Personally I have only been to AA meetings, but I'm assuming that they're almost identical.
My sister did the 12 step program and went to AA. Part of that 12 steps is admitting that there is something higher than you. Not necessarily a god, definitely not specifically a Christian god, but a being that shows that you are just part of this world and not in control of this. This is to help humble you as well as help you see that you have choices. You can choose sobriety. It's also to help you realize that your actions have a direct effect on the people around you.
Now AA itself I believe did start off as a Christian organization. They do do the serenity prayer which has the word "God" in it. That doesn't mean everyone who goes to such meetings are Christian or even believe in a specific god or religion. The Anonymous programs will not in doctrine you to a faith. What they will do though is provide you with a community of people who have been where you are and where you have been.. and hopefully where you want to be. It will provide you with potentially life long friends, mentors who can help you be strong, and even eventually a mentee who can help you learn by teaching.
That being said, my sister is 9 years, 3 months and 3 weeks sober from meth (among a bunch of other drugs she would use when she couldn't get meth). I'm thankful for every day I have her back. And while she is an amazingly strong person, I don't know if she could have done it without the support and friends she made in AA.
