addiction/dependence

I am 50 years of age and have been on Hydromorphone 4mg-4 times a day for approx.10 years now and need some advice on how to get off these meds. According to my doc he suggests just missing a dose here and there, as I have tried this I find it doesn't work and seriouse side effects. As I work  7 days a week and cannot miss work I need another way to dose down. Please help as it is causing other health issues with stomach problems. Hope I used the correct forum for this .

You need a taper schedule, not just a missed dose "here and there!!!"  Doctors should know better than that.  You have been on dilaudid for 10 years, so it won't be a cake walk, but it can be done!!!  I would talk with another doctor, and have them write out a taper schedule.  There are OTC things you can do to help with the WDs.

Good luck!

Have you talked to your doctor about tapering down? I know from exeprience missing a dose can put you into w/d's within 12 hrs. If you and your doctor is willing to taper down you could be off in a couple months. You should also get into aftercare as it gives you the tools to cope with your addiction/dependance as it is crucial to your recovery. Are you taking the hydromorphine for chronic pain? If so their are many support groups that could help you. I will pray that God gives you the strenght to beat this and keeps you on the road to recovery-quitin
