does hydrocodone contribute to depression? will it be worse with withdrawal?

i have been taking hydrocodone for about 5 years following  4 extensive back surgeries. i have been n 10/750 for 2 or 3 years, but have been on 5/500 for abouth the last year, 3 or 4 per day.  i suffer from severe depression and i take 225 mg. Effexor xr for that. i have not felt like "myself" in years, and i thought it was just because i am unable to do things physically like i once did. i now look and wonder if the hydrocodone has contributed to my depression? even though i felt good and energized for a short time after taking it, that feeling left and i would be more depressed than ever. I have not taken hydro in about 60 hours and am suffering from weakness, upset stomach, depression, crying and withdrawal from public. Please help me....

Your depression definitely needs addressed hon.  A lot of people with anxiety and/or depression find themselves self medicating with various substances.  Opiates are a popular choice, because they really help the symptoms of both of those...only to end up making the issues worse after time.

Once you're feeling a bit better with the w/ds, please talk to your doctor about your depression.  Antidepressants may be something to consider, along with therapy.

Great job thus far...you're really working hard to kick the pills....good job!  Keep posting!

Your determination is admirable!  I believe you really want to kick this disease, but sometimes we all have to get support. NA or AA could be helpful to you!  If your depression doesn't seem to get better, or your physical withdrawals don't start getting weaker, you should really seek addition help from a professional!  You have been on hydrocodone for a long time and it may take awhile to adjust to living clean & sober!  I had to learn how to live everyday life without some form of drug! Treatment can help with that!  Wish you all the luck! Prayers!

i am on day 10 and hot sweats and weakness are still here. my depression is about the same. it is an effort to drag out of bed and i want to go to bed as early at night as i can. My doctor started me on lamotrigine 25 mg. about 5 weeks ago and changed it to 50 mg. last week. i don't feel much better maybe i am not crying as much. don't know how long it will take to help. but life like this is barely worth living.don't know what to do. getting by one day at a time. tomorrow please bring me back to "myself". i feel like another person in my body and i can see the real me, but i grasp to get "me" back and i can't ---help

I really admire your attitude. Being positive really helps. If you are not eating, try to. Part of the weakness is lack of nourishment. And yes, you are right - it will get better tomorrow, or the next day - but you will heal.

thanks for the update. glad you are feeling better today.
congrats on day 7. keep pushing forward. have you been eating, stay hydrated? it is important to get up and move around as much as possible. go for walks and get out into the sunshine. walk around the grocery store, the mall, don't isolate. that will make things worse for you.
do you see a counselor to help with your depression?
do you have any hobbies to help keep you busy?
keep posting and reading here for continued support and encouragement,
keep the faith....it will get better....

Hi!! Yes after a person has become adjusted to a certain level of the drug/experience, removal of it affects the emotional/biochemical balance that has been established..We will experience some physiological aspects as well as emotional..I have almost 9 m in and thought I could not handle it..But now it does ease up and I am going to stay all natural..There are things that are good to help balance the brain out..Magnesium and B6 & B12s and also Amino Acids are good..If it goes on for a very, very long time then talk to the DR it could be something else..For me I just gave it time.
Bless

I truly believe the hydrocodone makes us depressed after taking it for a while. It also can increase our pain and cause rebound pain. It turns on you! You are doing great and are at the peak of physical withdrawls. In a day or two everything should die down a little bit. The mental and emotional part will take a little longer. Our bodies stop making endorphins after long term use of opiates. So, everything just needs to level back out. If you check out the Health Pages link at the bottom of the page, there is a list of supplements and foods that can help the process along. Exercise is also a wonderful tool for releasing those 'feel good' chemicals. Hang in there. Keep posting! We are here for you and want to help you any way we can through this process.

You need to seek the help of a doctor right away.  You should not feel this awful, especially not for years!  Your doctor may want to refer you to treatment of some sort.  Please do as he says, and you will get the REAL help you need. :-)  Blessings - Blu

Yes to the depression.  You will feel a bit down during WD's but they will pass. I think many of us on here have experienced exactly what you are saying and its completely normal.  Deep breaths! The weakness, stomach, crying and such is all a part of it as well.  You are doing great and congrats on 60hrs!   Keep pushing through!    I will send you a message with some help or you can view my Journal if you wish.  WE are here for you and you are not alone!   Hydro_fool
