5htp helps with seratonin release and hence depression...sleep aids like melatonin, valerian help more GABA is an amino that helps me sleep..good luck
5-HTP raises the level of serotonin in the brain. melatonin is a metabolite of serotonin, so taking 5-HTP can raise melatonin levels, but you also need to take vit b5, vit b6 and methionine for the conversion to effectively take place, at night time.
far easier to just take melatonin supps at night! i don't know heaps about it, just what i've read in studies. i can send you the link if you want.
but taking 5-HTP as a supp has shown to reduce depression, anxiety, even pain intensity, etc, so is probably a good thing to take. but it's good to consult a doctor before taking too many different supps, as i know there is a syndrome of serotonin toxicity, something like that anyway- too much has adverse effects....
i don't know about in US but here in Aust, it's not sold. we have to order it from nz and hope it crosses the border.
benadryl is an effective otc sleep aid -
I have heard bad things about 5-HTP. The health food store I go to won't even sell it.
I guess some are having bad experiences with it.
Valerian root is good for relaxation and sleep. And I know they have sleep blends with valerian root and other extracts in them that are suppose to work really well.
Good luck!
look at the amino acid protocols under the health discussions at rt hand side of page...I think you want melatonin - the 5-HTP is better for anti depression etc.....
