I have seen it prescribed for many things. I have seen it prescribed for people who were going through withdraws but it was mostly for headaches and other types of pain. I don't believe that the intent was to help with the withdraw symptoms and I really don't think that it would unless you have some sort of physical disablitity or debilitating pain that the drs know needs to be treated along with the w/ds.
It is also prescribed for many other reasons to include a mood stabilizer.
Bubulous is right- Gabapentin is one of those 'Miracle Drugs' that has 101 uses, lol.
Gabapentin HAS been used for a lot of withdrawal issues as an 'off brand use' for the med. It reduces heart rate in some people and eases up the withdrawal just as Clonodine does for others. It also causes a slightly 'nod' style of feeling which gives the masked feeling as if your body has received the level of 'tipsyness' it needs. It also numbs the nervous system slightly (as its used for nerve pain) which will reduce the anxiety and shakiness usually associated with withdrawals. (I have been prescribed Neurontin (gabapentin) for panic attacks in the past) And believe me- it will DEFINITELY give you a very slowed down sluggish sorta buzzed kinda feeling.
As far as it COMPLETELY stopping withdrawal, that is unusual but not impossible. If it's working for you I would say to STICK WITH IT and then slowly ween it from your system as you see fit.
I hope this helps :) Take Care!
