Opiate withdrawal Question--Anyone Else Falling Asleep At Weird TImes in Middle of the Day?

I am about 2 weeks into withdrawal from high doses of daily Oxycontin and Oxycodone use for about 5 years for pain management. I am definitely still having major trouble sleeping and staying asleep and I know from reading here that that is common and can take quite a while to  improve.

My question though is about something I haven't seen others mention: *I have been falling asleep all of a sudden most days in the middle of the day or evening for anywhere from 30 min to a couple hours. It is something I can't control. A wave of sleepiness comes over me quickly and I feel amost drugged I'm so tired. Then I pass out.*

Has this happened to anyone else? Is this becuase I'm not getting enough sleep at night and am not sleeping regularly that my body just finally gives in and has to sleep for a while even though it's in the middle of the day? If this has happened to you, when did it get better?

Withdrawal has made me really mucusy and congested so I have to take mucinex and that makes sleeping at night even harder and only add to the problem.

Would love any input anyone has. Thank you!!

Thanks H.B.T.K.,

Glad to know this is somewhat normal for withdrawal and that it will go away.

Yeah this happens to me also. It's a wave of hard sleep that just comes out of nowhere and I crash. It goes away though.

Thanks gnarly. I think you're right. I think my body is just starved for sleep and crashes. That's amazing you have so long clean after 10+ years, wow! My use was about 5 years daily, much longer than that but only a few days a month prior to 5 years ago. The past few years I was on about 250+ mg of Oxy per day. I did taper off for about a month but the withdrawal is still pretty intense. Thanks for sharing your experience, it helps to know the sleep thing will eventually get better. It's driving me crazy!

hey girlee....well your body is responding to the lack of sleep...once your past the normal threshold for sleep ....your body will just fall into a sleep because of overall
need for it...as for a time line it can be 2 weeks or like me 2 mo b/4 you get back to normal sleeping habits ...I stil get a ruff night here and there but when I first came
off methadone I would only sleep for like 2 to 3 hrs a night....now Im greatful to get 6hr
and got 112days clean....it realy depends on how bad a habit your breaking mine
was 10+yrs on the pills and then 6 1/2yrs on methadone so it was a long hard habit to break....hence the longer recovery time....just know it will get better with time.....I wouldn't plan any road trips wile this is happening to you and be extra careful driving at all ...it would be best not to drive wile this is happening....good luck in your recovery and God bless....Gnarly

Mucinex and Sudafed help with that but they do make the insomnia worse so it's a tradeoff.

By the way I have recently gone off ambien as well, although I've been off that longer than the pain pills. I wonder if that has anything to do with the sleep issues I'm having. But the falling asleep midday thing started only with oxy withdrawal so I think it's related to that. Some nights I only sleep like 2 hours or skip a full night of sleep, maybe my body just can't handle it and knocks me out after a while...

Luckily I haven't felt depressed thank God but I have very low motivation and energy. But from what I've read depression is a common withdrawal symptom. My guess is that focusing on the fact that you are off the substances and on your way to a fresh start might help a little? And remembering that this, including the depression, is temporary. Our bodies need to time adjust to being substance free and that includes our brains.

So it sounds kind of like others aren't experiencing the sleep thing the same way I am. Not sleeping yes, but not passing out uncontrollably midday. I'm mid 30s, not sure if that's considered old, but I feel old so.. : )

I am on day 8. When does the TERRIBLE depression end? Was taking 160 to 240 mg of Oxy for quite awhile. Cannot keep this up without some hope of ending the black hole i'm in

I agree it could be your bodies response to lack of good sleep.  I am also 2 weeks in and still waking up constantly, some nights worse than others.  I just got a script for trazadone to help with that.  However I have had the odd nap but not the way you are describing.  I did that more while on the oxycontin, eyes would get blurry and it was hard to stay awake.

And whats with the mucusy thing?  Me too!!  That part has been very weird. Sometimes its like I have a band around my eye brows, not exactly pain but pressure.  I guess we gotta just ride it out but be careful what you do while your body adjusts.

How old are you?  Doesn't that happen anyway to people who aren't using as they get older :)  If you're still having trouble sleeping at night than your body still adjusting and It's normal that you'd be tired during the day.  I've come off of high doses too and at 2 weeks I was probably getting 4 hrs at night on average...basically the minimum amount to survive for a prolonged period of time.  That lasted another 2 weeks, then just like that sleeping normally just came back to me.
