my teeth???

Can being on percocets cause your teeth to decay? i've had lots of dental problems over the course of the 2 yrs I was on them. LOTS of decay.....could being on percocets do that? I had gastric bypass too, but I'm not sure which caused the decay, if either. Let me know if anyone else has experienced dental problems after being on pain pills. curious to know if there is a connection and what you guys know about it. Love you all. Stay strong!! PLEASE!

domino has the right of it.  Opiates cause dry mouth - not enough saliva flow - which makes it extremely easy for plaque and bacteria to set up shop.  Opiates also do a number on nutrition.  Your body needs a nutritional boost while you're on them and of course, that and dental hygiene are low on the list for most addicts.

The gastric bypass itself isn't an issue.  If you had an underlying reflux problem that would be part of the dental issues.  Constant reflux of stomach acids into the mouth (usually at night when you don't realize it's happening) can easily destroy your teeth and esophagus to boot.

PS - I DESPISE having to go to the dentist!

Most of us have had dental issues after we cleaned up.  The pills pretty much took away all our saliva!  You will probably notice this for quite some time now.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!
