someone, anyone.. please help..

So here I am at over two months sober from Percocet, and I had an accident which landed me in this hospital. When I was there, nothing was given to me for pain, although it was offered by the doctor who saw me. Here is the thing... I am in a lot of pain right now, and they gave me 45 Vicodin to go home with. The pharmacy [in this town] is inside the hospital, so when you're discharged, the pills are discharged right along with you.

I have stitches in my arm and I'm also in a splint right now as well. The pain is KILLING me right now, but I have only taken Motrin 800 that I have an unlimited supply to because of my back and leg issues that I've spoken about before here on the forums. Would it be okay for me to take a couple over the next few days to get me through what they said I needed Morphine and/or Percocet for? [Yes, I swear to you guys that I refused pain medication while in the ER when I was taken there. I have no reason to lie to you all, as I've been completely honest from the minute I signed up for this website..]

Please let me know what your input is on this, as it's very much so needed. You ALL know that my husband has been my biggest fan through all of this, and even he is saying that it will be okay. He knows I am over the pills, but I know what being an addict is whereas he does not. Don't get me wrong, as my drug of choice was always Percocet and never anything else - BUT - I think you all know where I am going with this. The DR gave these to me to go home with, because he said that after the first 24 hours, I will need something. He told me that the adrenaline was what was telling me to say that I didn't want/need pain medication, and I think that he was right. I did notify him that I was a recovering addict, etc.

Thanks in advance for all your help, and I hope to get loads of comments! I will be on for the most part of the night, so I will be here!

You all are amazing. Sobriety, if even for two months, is far more important than a little relief from 36 stitches. YES!!!! 36 STITCHES, and I'm sticking to the Motrin 800. I might hate myself for it in the morning... But, for the love of God - I am ALIVE!

Hi Peaceinknowing.. sorry to hear about your accident.. we are a stubborn lot are we not :) Just because we are addicts does not mean we can never take a pain med when needed.. But I agree with sara we have to have a plan.. Have hubby hold them for you.. since he works have him only leave what you will need ok. then when the pain is tolerable get rid of the rest.. I'm proud of you that you turned down the harder drugs and told them you are a addict in recovery.. see all Dr.s are not that bad :) Just really take care with them.. hugs lesa

My husband has had them in his posession since the doctor gave them to him when we were there at the hospital, so yes.. He would be in control of them. After I posted this, I shook my head. Even though the Motrin 800 isn't touching where there needs to be relief, I want to just do this without the medicine right now. Even if he doles them out to me, and even if they weren't my DOC, I have a bad feeling about this. I asked my husband to flush them down the toilet and he did.

I've been proud of myself over the past two months so much.. But not as much as I am right now. I can live with the pain, I suppose. I've lived with the ongoing issue with my back and leg and those have been hurtful at times as well. I'm still alive, and for that I am grateful.

Sorry to hear about your accident.  I hope you will recover quickly.

Now for the pain med situation......Will your husband hold them for you and dole them out as needed for the pain??  If he will have him lock them up where you cant get at them.  Being in pain can really wear a person down.  Please dont you be in charge of them no matter if they werent your DOC.  You wont ever be over the pills cuz if you were you wouldnt be bothered by this.  Pain meds were designed for this sort of thing.....pain.  Just be careful..........sara
