xanax withdrawal

Hi everyone,

I am on xanax for 5 weeks, 1 mg daily before sleep. I stopped taking this medication for almost a week and I could sleep for 2-3 hours a day. Can anyone tell me how long it will take for me to sleep properly? Many people suggested me to taper it but I dont want to wait that long and take chances. I have an other question. Are my major withdrawal symptoms gone as I am not taking this medicine from a week? I dont want to use any extra medications as a substitution. Many people are suggesting me to go to a doctor for a normal sleep and I dont want to take any chances of other drug addictions by going to a doctor. I am concerned about the major withdrawal symptoms that can occur and I dont know whether I can get them at this dosage and for this short period of time.

Thank you

It depends on the individual person but it will probably take as long or longer for your sleep to return as you were on the xanax. The Benzo drugs like Xanax were not ment to be used more than a few days to a week. When they are used longer than that it changes the way your brain works and it takes time for it to return to normal. I took Ambien which is closely related to Benzos. I took it for 6 months, have been off of it for several months and I still do not sleep good at all. But I refuse to take any other medication so I have to just wait it out and be patient.

Only 1 mg  at night doesn't sound like it should be a problem to go off of.  There are a lot of people who could probably answer your question better than I can . I wouldn't be too concerned about major w/d's if it were me, though.
