nice not drinking anymore story ((long)

i thought i would post this because right after i thought a few years ago drink time had my nights wrapped up and limited so many things..........last friday i was driving home at 830 pm...it was well below 0..a dark windy cold night...as i turned onto my road off the main road i was looking at snowmobile tracks driving slow to figure out the best way to cross from my lake to the next lake....i drove down over a small bridge and kept looking in the woods ...i saw a dim refector way down over the bank and just thought a snowplow had hit a reflector and knocked it down the bank...i drove about another 75 feet and saw what looked like a snowmobile track going into the woods..i went a little further and thought just maybe the refector was from a snowmobile ...a long shot but i went back...as i came up on the snow bank i got up in my truck and looked right down over the snowbank down in about 10 feet below and saw a car wheel..got mt flashlight and knife and went around my truck on top of the snowbank...things didn't look go at all...the car had flipped over and most of it was covered with snow with trees broken all over the place...there was one back door still above the snow...i could see a real dim inside light on through the window that was covered with ice..as i got about a third of the way down the bank i heard screaming that sounded load but real faint..as i got closer the screamming was really bad...i got up to door and it was jammed shut by branches..so i asked if they could hear me...a girl said yes..so i asked if they were alright..and they said in a really scared voices were ok...so i told them i would be right back with a tool from my truck to get them out...i went back up the hill ...got a hammer to pry or smash the window in...and another car was coming down the road..the lights were in my eyes..i know i was looking a little rough..had a hammer and a flashlight and on the road you couldn't see any sign of an accedent...the car stopped about 50 feet from me..i went up fast to to tell them to call in the accedent..was totally blinded by the light ...as i came up around the lights i saw it was a boarder patrol..i think he probably had a gun pointed at my throat..it was a crazy scene..so i told him to call it in and give me a hand...i went right back to the car and broke some branches to get the door open...man did though kids fly out of there..they were so scared and i was so happy for them to have made it through and so glad i was alert enough to pick up on that dim refector over the bank.......aside from being freaked out they were alright ...the driver was maybe 16 or 17 and the other kids were maybe 12 and 14......after i got the kids with their parents i left felling really great about it all..and thinking good thing it wasn't in my drinking days or thoughs kids could have been in trouble..after drink time i was in for the night.......billy

WD- been thinking about wondering how u been...my computer went down at home...still have pics of all ur dogs in it-its in the repair shop...wondering where ur living now.....wow what a story and oh yes that coulda been us in our drinking days....i had a close call in 1975 drunken x-boyfriend went behind guardrail down a small ravine and we hit a tree...i was not drunk that nite at all for a change..it was new years eve of 75!glad those kids were ok...u were their guardian angel dogman!:)

thanks for the story. it's amazing how things change when we put the bottle down. i used to think that i could figure anything out, and would offer my intoxicated (and unwanted) input. today i realize that i know very little, but i can actually do good in this world, and have begun to notice the things that i used to miss right in front of me. when i was out there i was just part of the problem, the longer i stay sober i can see more of the solution. stories like yours help me remember why it matters. thanks again and take care----gm
