Hey there,
Just saw your post.  In my case I put off the barium enema, until I feel better able to handle it.  For some odd reason, since my son;s death, my gastric system is in a turmoil.  First six weeks, serious constipation: since last Sunday, a week ago, soupy diarrhea.  Bleck!!!  Just know it is reaction to stress, and will be patient.  Think I am a bit better today.

As I mentioned, the cancer was not detected by doctor who did colonoscopy.  I self referred myself to a prominent surgeon who found it with a physical exam in office.  He doesn't have much bedside manner but I am thankful I finally took my health in my own hands and saw him.  He did a biopsy, with me asleep, for a full idea of what he was looking at; then referred me to MD Anderson here in  Orlando for the six weeks of chemo and radiation.  The biopsy revealed cancerous tissue which was in an advanced stage and spreading.  Farrah Fawcett died of this cancer as I was in the early healing stage.

My daughter is finally getting a colonoscopy and is upbeat about it.  Took her time to find a woman who is good as well as kind. She has told her my story, so doctor will take care to explore anal area.  You know this is actually a fast growing and rare skin cancer caused by HPV.  Thanks for adding me to prayer list: you are too nice.  Three congregations prayed for me (total strangers) as I battled the cancer.  God probably got tired of hearing about me and decided I'd better stay here awhile:).

Just back from 3 month check up with oncology surgeon.  There is a test I'd forgotten about: and which I have scheduled for next week.  A barium enema...  it would not be a substitute for a colonoscopy.  But depending on your history and what he is looking for...might be ok.

Problem is: the prep is very similar to prep for colonoscopy. So might as well go with it as it allows doctor to do biopsies and remove growths.

Hi,
Wish I could tell you there is an alternative test for checking out our colons, but have not heard of one.  We all hate that day long prep!  The actual procedure is not so bad considering we are fast asleep:).

I am not familiar with current AMA guidelines regarding this test. Bet they can be found online.  Is five years a standard for someone who has shown no problems?  Or is this timeline recommended for patients who had polyps?  Or any other condition doctor wants to keep an eye on?  I believe any predisposition to colon cancer, like having a close relative die of the disease, is a variable doctors keep in mind as well.

I am an anal cancer survivor, and the colonoscopy proved to be a poor tool for finding it.
This is a fairly rare cancer, so a doctor has to be looking for it to find.  My colon is brittle from radiation so a complete exam with this test is impossible. Back to your question, my surgeon has not mentioned an alternative, besides CT-scans, which only let him know if there is a possible problem he would check with the dreaded colonoscopy..lol.

My daughter and nieces are your age, and are all wishing there were another method for checking their colons:).    I am sure you know  this...but this exam has been popular for 10 or 15  years, largely due to media coverage of its value in detecting and preventing colon cancer.  I am now seeing medical articles which challenge current guidelines .

Without knowing more about your specific situation, I would advise you to chat with your doctor about your feelings, including an alternative appropriate to your case.

There is a colon cancer forum in MH: maybe a post there would elicit more information.
