14, ANXIETY- SMOKING? DRUGS?

Hi everyone, was just wondering if someone could give me a slight lecture on smoking.. Because of my anxiety, I have recently been thinking of starting smoking, I don't know how i will do it if i do, but its been a thought constantly in my mind. You know how they say that it relaxes you and all that, well i promised myself i would never ever smoke, but I really do need to calm down a little.... I don't know if i will feel better or worse afterwards...
OH and i am only 14, I know I am young and all, and i am not thinking of this because its cool or something my friends do... because they don't. My bunch of friends are the nice, quite type girls. And they wouldn't start smoking i don't think...
But anyway, I really need these thoughts to go away, and to not make me feel so helpless and stuff. Please please oh please help me!!!!

Hi there.  Yes, smoking is not a good habit to help with anxiety.  I'm not sure it would do much for that anyway.  Now, orally soothing is calming.  Try gum or chewing on licorice or something like that.  Even beef jerky.  I'm not kidding.  this helps to slow down our nervous system.

But smoking starts a whole pattern that you don't want to get into.  I personally have noticed how socially unacceptable smoking has gotten over the years.  It might seem 'cool' at times but in truth, if someone lights up around a nonsmoker they will get the evil eye.  They hide their kids because of second hand smoke.  It makes you stink as said above.  Your clothes will smell like smoke!  Your breath!  Your hair!  Your teeth could yellow.  Your lungs could blacken.  If you get sick, you'll get sicker due to the irritation smoking causes your lungs.

and it is addictive.  You could wind up trying to stop smoking at 40 and 50 and 60 . . .   for the rest of your life it could end up being a habit you can't shake.

Do your parents know about the anxiety??  What about a counselor?  I personally love counseling because it is like your own cheerleader that only wants to listen to you and help!

Yeah!!  I'm so glad you see this isn't a good idea and took all the advice in the light it was intended, to help you.  Good luck sweetie.  I'm sorry that it is a bit hard right now.  When your therapist comes back, maybe going back would be a good idea.

but do try some of the other ideas to help calm you and ease your anxiety.  Best of luck to you

The notion that smoking calms you down is old tobacco company advertising.  The only reason it calms smokers down is because they're addicted to it and will suffer withdrawal if they don't smoke.  It won't calm down a non-smoker for all the reasons stated above.  I lost my mother and father to smoking related illnesses -- believe me, you don't want to go there!

Yes I know I am not old enough to buy them, but I saw some girls my age and from my school smoke, and they like had a pack and all that. I guess I was just so naïve to think that I could get away with it... I am always so conscious about what I smell like to others, so I know I would not like myself reeking of smoke...If I will feel worse if I smoke, than I do already, then I don't want that...
It's nice to know that someone with experience is trying to help a stranger.. Thank you so much for all your help. :)

Thank you very much for this very detailed explanation... Its so weird that I have these thoughts because I recently did an assignment on Lung cancer at school, so I know that is mostly caused by smoking, and I had to explain what it does to your lungs and everything.
And yeah my mum knows about my anxiety, I used to see a counsellor but she had to take some time offl, so I thought I could keep going with the anxiety and whatever else on my own... Sometimes I do feel like I should go and see the women replacing her, but other times I am  okay... I also do not want to bother anyone about it anymore, I have probably ruined peoples lives because I have been such a nuisance.

Well said!

Marcy, I wish I could go back and never start.  I'm only 41 and already smoking has affected me in very negative ways.  My voice has gotten much deeper.  I used to have a beautiful very high Soprano singing voice, but not anymore.  My teeth have been affected, my breathing, you name it.

There is a million reasons why it's a bad idea and not ONE reason it could help you.

Nursegirl is right. Smoking is not the way to go. Nicotine is a stimulant.
You should research stimulants and what they do to your body.
Smoking will make your heart beat faster because it has to work harder. Im sure it does something to your blood pressure. Makes you dizzy. A racing heart is what you experience in an anxiety attack. Something you shouldn't want to do to yourself. Its best to stay healthy and not put poison into your body. If you're looking for something to relax you, try some tea. Have a long bath. Try scented candles or burn some essential oil. Lavender is really wonderful and calming. Please don't smoke.
It'll be all down hill from there.
Good luck!

DO NOT START SMOKING!!!!

Nicotine is actually a stimulant, it will CAUSE more anxiety, it can make your heart race, give you weird head rushes.  The only reason people say "it relaxes you" is the people who are addicted and get agitated when it's been too long between smokes.

Seriously, it would be the dumbest thing you could ever do. The SMELL is awful, not to mention it's EXPENSIVE.  Here, cigs are over $7.00 a pack!  Plus, you're not even old enough to buy them.

PLEASE don't do it.  It's a BAD move.
