Anxiety or sleep?

I havent been able to breathe for days now. Nothing helps. Nothing!
I am also soooo sleepy, day and night the past week or so but not sleeping well at all!
Is the anxiety coming from lack of sleep or is the causing the insomnia??

Can't answer the chicken and egg question, but usually insomnia comes from some kind of stress.  You could do a sleep study to see if you have sleep apnea or something like that, but if you can't sleep because you can't relax, that's anxiety.  There are breathing exercises just for what you're describing.  When we're anxious most people breathe in very shallowly.  Shallow breathing is nervous breathing.  Relaxed breathing is deep breathing from the abdomen, as taught in yoga.  If you go see a therapist who is a specialist in treating anxiety they will probably teach you some breathing exercises derived from yoga to help you learn to breathe from your abdomen particularly in anxious situations.

Sounds like anxiety attack. One attack can last a looooong time.
Before I knew what it was....I just knew I had not been able to get enough air. I went to Dr and told him I thought I had developed asthma. We did a battery of tests and all was fine. So, I was diagnosed with anxiety attacks.

I always feel like I can't take a deep breath. I have anxiety issues too. It always freaks me out and I feel like I sm the only person in the world going through this kind if thing. I don't smoke , I think I am healthy. I work out with no problem. I just always seem to be worried about my breathing.

Thank you for your kind reaponse.
But, my original question was/is......is the insomnia causing the severe anxiety....or is anxiety causing the severe insomnia????

That is propably becaouse you are trying to hard to breath! Stop trying to hard and let your self breath normaly for a while..

I apologize Pax.

The only way to describe is that I feel like I can just barely take itty bitty baby shallow breaths. I cannot breathe in deep enough for it to feel like its adequate air. And the once in awhile that I am able to get that deep breathe, it hurts my chest.

I hate that feeling too.  But just as Paxiled noted, if you really couldn't breath you would be dead. You really do have to keep reminding yourself of this simple but evident fact.  I know how it feels. You'll feel like you have to focus on your breathing more in order to keep from dying. But the real reason you have to focus on your breathing is to prevent from "thinking " about dying. Keep going to sleep when your really tiered. You fall asleep naturally. If u wake up suddenly just remind yourself that I woke up so there is no need to fear dying. And go back to sleep. It gets better over time.

I have also experienced this...especially when I was among people..like agoraphobia but it was coming from my anxiety. The more you think about it the more it will persist. You should try to relax and think of something else for a litle while.Dont try to breath harder it will make it worse(it did for me).Just let it be try not to think about it.Anxiety can defenately cause insomnia...although not being able to sleep can couse you anxiety too..my bet would be the other way around.Either way you should talk to someone and figure out why are you in such an anxiety...

No, really, it's not meant to be snarky.  We can't share our experiences with you if you don't describe them well enough for us to know what you're asking.  You literally said you can't breathe.  You didn't say you hyperventilate, or breathe too fast or too slow or you have sinus congestion or any number of things it could be.  So nobody is answering because nobody knows what you mean.  And I've had more major anxiety attacks than I can count and I've never had a problem breathing; we all experience our anxiety differently.  So fill in the details and maybe someone can help you.
