I suffer with severe general anxity disorder. I to took benzo's for 20+ years,And tried to deal with it in my own.. St Johns worth never woked for me, Kava works well as dose Krayom try a slow strain.. with Kava and Kratom finding a good supplier and the dose that works for you is the key !!! They really are a miricsl plant and tree!!!
Interesting you ask that question. I managed health food stores for many years, but the anxiety problem started before that and so I was on medication. When the medication I was on started to get to be a problem, I decided to taper off and try to utilize my knowledge I had gained in natural medicine, but unfortunately had a rare reaction to stopping the medication and that was pretty much it for my mental and physical health. Just unlucky. So my story isn't really applicable, but I did help many people with their regimens and got to know a lot of natural practitioners and worked with them to treat their patients -- we were basically the pharmacy -- so I got to watch them go through their treatment. For most of them, it took time, but they did improve, but it wasn't quick.
Natural medicine, when practiced by professionals, doesn't use just one remedy very often. It uses an integrated approach that would approach problems by targeting the various organs that are involved with it, and it would also include therapy, meditation, and all the usual relaxation suspects. St. John's Wort is an antidepressant, not for anxiety, so unless your anxiety is caused by depression -- which is often the case -- this herb probably won't help much. I suggest you begin your education by reading an overview by Hyla Cass, a psychiatrist at UCLA, called Natural Highs. Then, because you're not well educated in natural medicine, I'd try to find a professional to guide you until you do learn. This could be a naturopath, a functional physician (a psychiatrist who practices integrated medicine), a regular doc who practices integrated medicine, an herbalist, or the like. As for the antidepressant that is most like an ssri, that would be 5-HTP, a metabolite of tryptophan that along with B6 manufactures serotonin in the body, and relaxant herbs and/or a pseudo-amino acid called taurine that, along with B6, manufacturers GABA, the neurotransmitter targeted by benzos. Valerian, mentioned above, acts like a benzo, but is much milder. The best of these is kava, but don't use it if you have liver problems. You would also use adaptogens to balance the adrenals, such as ashwagandha and holy basil. See how complicated it is to do it correctly? Good luck.
I have tried St. John's Wort but did not really experience much of an effect from it. My mom however used it regularly for about 1 year. I have found Valerian root to be a little more effective with providing some calmness. Good luck with finding something that works for you!
