xanax vs ativan help please

was taking .25mg xanax as needed. doc just prescribed 1mg ativan.

can someone help tell me the difference

They are both short acting benzodiazepines.  While they are in the same class of medication and very similar, they do differ slightly in their action.  Some people have had success with one, while others prefer the second one.  My guess is you discussed with your doctor that your symptoms weren't well controlled, so he opted to change your med.  

Generally, 0.5mg is equal to 1mg Ativan, so he also increased the strength of the med for you.  Give the Ativan time to work, it may end up working better for you.  Keep your doc informed of your progress and any issues you are having.
