I know panic attacks are hell.  Keep in mind that it is a natural response coming at the wrong time.  Our mind senses danger and kicks into the "fight or flight" mode and floods our bodies with adrenaline to do this.  Since we aren't in that situation the adrenaline has nothing to work on, and this results in a panic attack.  It's important to work off the adrenaline by pacing, walking, anything physical, while trying to get your mind off of it.  Don't sit and dwell on it, I know it's easier said than done.  Make sure you are breathing deeply as when stressed we tend to breathe more shallow and this adds to the problem.  Exercise helps a lot with stress, even if you just walk.  Take care.

Nobody knows the answer to your question.  This has been argued about forever.  Some schools of psychotherapy believe it's essential to find a cause; some think it's irrelevant, most notably CBT.  My own opinion is that for some people there is a cause, for some there isn't.  I've never found a cause of mine, but therapies that don't think the cause is important haven't helped me either.  The problem here is thinking just because science is involved there are answers.  Science is the attempt to find answers.  In the case of mental illness, scientists are still looking for the answer to this question.  There are people who have gotten better with both kinds of therapists, and there are those who have never gotten better with any kind of therapist.  What we know about the mind is very little; lots of information, very little knowledge.  But scientists are still looking.  We actually know little about our world in general, and our bodies.  Doctors act as if they know more than they do for many reasons. some therapeutic, some financial, some prideful.  The most important thing is to find a way to feel better, and that just because healing is more an art than a science, many people do get better, so something is working for some people.  Try to find what works for you.

Anxiety is as varied as viruses are.  Everyone gets anxiety and a virus some time in their lives.  Because one gets the cold virus doen't in any way mean they know what it's like to get the AIDS virus.  This makes it hard to give someone advice about it because we can only converse about the one we are familiar with.  This is why professional help is so critical.
Yes, most professionals may have never experienced the ailments they treat for, but they are better trained in identifying them and how to deal with them.
Just what is 'anxiety' anyway???  Perhaps I should post this separately because I'd like to know.  Is the anxiety you feel the same as what I feel?  Can anxiety even be adequately described?  There are untold symptoms it causes, we see that here. But what is the feeling
of anxiety?  Is it simply a nervouseness?  Or as it is for me, Is it sickness and pain?
Oh well, that's enough for now :-)

The root cause can be emotional or physical. In my case it was physical. You might consider having your adrenals tested. It is usually easier to cure the physical problem.

Very interesting article.  According to it, this could be in your genes, and they just haven't found the actual "genetic" link. This is common is genetic conditions, my son has one and they cannot find the mutated gene, even though they know it's there.  I know there has been a lot of debate over anxiety and depression and whether or not it is hereditary, it appears they have compiled more evidence to show other reasons than something traumatic happening to someone in the past.  Thanks for the input and I will research further.  Take care and keep us posted on how you're doing.

im not in contact with my dad.
and never was as a child. didnt grow up around him.
so its not that. ive only found out he had panic disorder
through my grandma a few weeks ago..... and he started getting
them at the same age as me (18.) ive had this start in Feb. and it hasn't
gone away since then.... i get panic attacks. not all the time... but i think
i have anxiety all the time because of them.... (breathless, dizziness, discontented at times, change in heart rate sometimes its slow some times its racing. [[sometimes my legs feel really weak)
ive read it can be in your genes.....
and that can cause it. but i have no idea.

Are you sure i couldn't have got this though my genes?

Experts claim it's not hereditary, so it's not in your genes.  However, growing up and seeing this type of behavior can make you more prone to having the same problem.  Just witnessing a panic attack as a child in someone you love is traumatizing, and this may be what's causing your anxiety.  Although you feel you haven't worried about it, it may have always been an under-lying fear of yours that one day, you too, would have panic attacks.  Anxiety feeds off of fear, and until this fear is addressed, it's a vicious cycle.

The "root cause" plays an important role because it is what has caused your anxiety.  It is typically something traumatic that we never really dealt with or just forgot about.  When this happens it presents itself as anxiety thus demanding to be dealt with. This is why therapy is so important, we learn what happened to us, deal with it and then we can let it go and move forward.  You can't defeat the enemy if you don't know what the enemy is!  Alcohol worsens anxiety and is a form of self-medicating. I've been told that although anxiety is not hereditary, it does tend to run in familes.  Just because you don't remember anything happening, doesn't mean it didn't.  Good luck with this and take care.

The root cause doesn't really matter anyways, whatever it was it happened, you must put it in the past and stop looking for what it was. You must think about the future and how you are going to defeat this condition.
