Excessive yawning associated with Anxiety?

Has anyone experienced excessive yawning associated with having anxiety? Some days are better than others but I just cannot get a full breath unless I yawn. It is sooo frustrating and quite embarrassing to be yawning all the time at work/home. I get so irritated with it at night sometimes that I just go to bed so it stops. If someone else is experiencing this, what do you do to stop this? breathing exercises? Please help! I want to feel normal again! (i have tried googling this symptom and it says its either GERD/acid reflux or anxiety. I posted this in the GERD community forum but got nothing in response so I am trying it here) Thanks in advance :-)

Have you tried yoga class that specifically works on breathing or a meditation class. Both of them would not be a quick fix but a practice.

I take a thyroid medication daily. The Dr pulls my blood yearly in July but if I go before that, I will definitely have her check the other levels. Thank you!

Hi Big A. I was wondering if you have low blood sugar because yawning is a sign of LBS. Along with feeling shakey and tired. A simple blood test can confirm or rule this out. If you have been skipping meals this may be the problem. I have GAD and when it hits I'm pacing about, thoughts race and its hard to concentrate. You can test this yourself. When you start yawning, drink a glass of OJ. If it goes away, see a doc and get tested. Good luck honey! Let me know what happens.

Not that I'm aware of. Sometimes I get real shaky, sweaty and just feel "off" and I either have a piece of chocolate or fruit whichever is closest and then it gets better about five min later. Dr claims that it's fine....

Hi Sweety. Yes, this can be common with anxiety. I just talked to your mom about your question. When we have anxiety we tend to take shallow breaths. What we need to do is try our best to take deep slow breaths. I'm betting that you're breathing shallow and this causes the yawning. Yawning will get oxygen in to your lungs. So will deep breathing so I recommend you start practicing every single day. Most of us do not breathe right so it's a good idea to be aware of how we're breathing and if it's not properly then we can catch ourselves and work on taking those long deep breaths from the stomach. I hope this helps. I'm here any time you want to talk or have a question. I'm also a friend of your mom's on FB if you want to catch me there.

Thank you so much. Some days it's just miserable! I will work on doing slow deep breaths and see if that helps. Its hard to understand because i don't always feel like i am in an anxious situation but my body/mind think otherwise. Thank you again!

You wouldn't happen to be on Lexapro would you?  That is a common side effect.  Also anxiety itself can make you tired, it does me.  It just wears your body out.  That could explain the yawning.  We also tend to not breath properly with anxiety.  Not getting proper breaths could also cause yawning.

Thanks for responding! I'm not on any medications for it anymore. Any suggestions to help with the constant need for a full breath?
