I'm 33 yrs.old as I sit in my room and weigh the pros and cons of sending my daughter to daycare because her classmate was throwing up when I picked her up yesterday! Of course I was immediately feeling uneasy because of it and took meds last night to not throw up! I've talked to a therapist about it& it's done no good. This has been with me my ENTIRE Life! As a 6yr.old I sat outside my house for hours  because a family member had a virus. I wouldn't spend the night with friends because what if I got sick& didn't have my Mom? I wouldn't go to school because of it. If I threw up, I'd never wear the same clothes again(I'm better with that now). Now I have a child, she got a virus while with my Mom and then my Mon got it. I was out of town so luckily I didn't have to deal with it because I'm a basket case! It's not that seeing others throw up bothers me as bad as me catching a stomach bug! My family gets really bad viruses that almost always land us at the ER or in the hospital. It's like we throw up so much that we start to dry heave and it's just THE worst thing ever, in my eyes! It's so bad that before I had my daughter if someone would've said Either throw up or die, I'd seriously weigh my options. When I went into labor 43hrs. I didn't care about the pain, it was "Will this make me throw up?" Basically what I do is when I get nauseated, which is frequently, I dope myself up on promethazine and zofran and try to prevent it from happening. Also, if I get sick, I have to have my mother first, right beside me. Second, would be my brother. Those are the only 2 people that are acceptable. I totally lose control physically and mentally. Inside, the panic I feel is so intense that it's unexplainable and physically, I can aim where I'm throwing up, it's just an unmanageable situation. My family is aware of my phobia but it's hard to fully understand a phobia unless you have one. My mom said when I was 6yrs. Old that I got a terrible stomach virus and it could've stemmed from that. Is it a form of PTSD? Anxiety? Control Issue? I don't know but it is miserable and disabling and a I need help!

Hi Sweetie..............what you have is called emetophobia and it's a psychological problem, not a physical one.
You need to tell your parents immediately so they can get you the help you need to overcome this. You will probably see a child psychologist to help you figure out why you are so terrified of throwing up. I know you're scared, but this is NOT fatal and is highly curable, with the proper help. If for some reason you can't talk to your parents about this, talk to the school nurse or a teacher you like and trust, an aunt or uncle, a friends mother, someone at your church............just please talk to someone about this and they will help you.
I want you to calm down about this. Many of us have phobias, which is what you have. Even as adults, we get scared, too, but we know if we get help, we'll be OK. Just like you'll be OK.
Please write back after you've talked to someone so we know you're getting help, OK?
We are always here, so if you get scared, just post to us.
Peace
