First time takin Escitalopram, feeling dizzy, is this normal?

I took Escitalopram first time today. AN hour later I started feeling a little dizzy and spaced out. I took a small dose (half of 20mg tablet), like my psychiatrist told me to. Is it normal to get dizzy when taking it the first time, because your body is not used to it yet?
Also, how long can the dizziness last?

Thanks for the reply. I have a question: is the dizziness there all the time or does it go away at some point? Like say..12 hours after taking a dose?

In my experience with medications like this, I did have side effects whenever I started, stopped, or adjusted the dosage.  It took a couple of weeks for them to go away.  I am a big proponent of medications like these as long as you combine this with talk therapy.  I also believe that we are already nervous about taking it and we may compound the side effects with our minds a little bit.  As with any medication, just stay in contact with your doctor about it and if you do not like this particular medication there are others that could possibly be a better fit for you.  In my opinion, give it a good couple of weeks before you decide to conitnue/stop this medication.  Just ensure you do this under the supervision of your doctor.
