Flight meds

Is there a safe and effective tranquilizer to take for flight anxiety?  I tried the generic brand of xanax (alprazelam) a few years ago and it had absolutely zero effect.  Maybe I just didn't take enough but the prescription is over 5 years old now and I would be afraid to experiment.  Is valium a better options?  I don't like having to buy and consume alcohol in airports or on planes and don't like being impaired while on traveling on business, so an effective tranquilizer would be ideal - also one that wouldn't have a bad interaction if I had wine with dinner after arriving at my destination.  Is there such a prescription that I could ask my physician to prescribe?

I definitely won't use the expired meds.  I've never tried Ativan - will check into that.  Thanks!

Don't use expired meds....I wonder why xanax didn't work.  There are many benzos doctors can prescribe in my opinion.  I think that a fast acting one with a short half life works the best for a flight in my opinion.  But repeated/long term use with these meds can cause dependence and tolerance.  Have you ever asked your doctor about ativan?  That seemed to work the best for me, but we are all different in how we react to medications.  You are smart for not experiementing on your own with these types of medications....keep us posted!
