How to stop heart palpitations

I need help!  Several days ago my heart started skipping beats. It lasted 9 hours, 'til I went to bed.  I woke up fine...they had stopped.
I know it's stress.  I just got a phone call causing the stressful situation again. The palpitations are so strong they make me cough...feels like something is catching in my throat.
What I really want is something to stop this!  Is there an over-the-counter item I can purchase so I can sleep tonight?
I've tried to relax by breathing deeply and slowly but it doesn't help at all.
Thanks for any help....

You should see a health care provider for an ECG and blood work just to rule out a heart problem. For anxiety:

I can't think of any OTC meds that provide instant help with anxiety. There are some herbal products that can help but some take time to build up (St John's Wort) and others are very mild (chamomile tea).

You should try breathing exercises, medication, Yoga ...or even just take a good vigorous walk (but not in the evening). Get a massage...take a hot bath or shower...listen to relaxing music.

Warm milk and or chamomile tea, a hot shower or bath and a some soft music...and a good boring book help me sleep on those occasions when I have trouble.

I would get it checked out by a doctor,it doesnt have to be serious but just taking something over the counter doesnt sound like the best idea to me.

Welcome to the Anxiety Community!

There ARE indeed a few things you can do to stop palpitations, however, you really need to be worked up by your doctor (and possibly a cardiologist) to rule out any real physical cause.  Since you're going through some stressful situations, it's likely the palps could very well be anxiety related, but it's always important to be thoroughly assessed medically first, before assuming that.
