Please don't feel bad because you have been fine for a while & now this is happening.  Stress is hard to handle sometimes & when we go through life there are always going to be situations that bring high stress and that's ok!  I have been free from major panic attacks for 5 years up until a week & a half ago.  I can attribute it to major life stress recently (divorce & selling my house).  I take 10mg of Lexapro & take .25mg of Xanax also.  30 pills of Xanax used to last me 1 year because I only took it as needed.  I have now been taking one every 6hrs since this last bout started.  I am always scarred to take it as well, but it does work for me.  The Doc & my therapist always tell me it is the lowest dose so I can take two if I have to but I'm always scarred to.  Don't really know why.  So I can def understand your fear.  These meds are OK to take together!  If it's not working for you talk to your Doc about it.  For me, as anxious as it makes me when I first take the Xanax it always calms me down within 20 minutes.  If it does the same for you then it is fine.  I think if I switched to a different med it would cause me even more anxiety.  You are not alone!  :)

These are often mixed, it's not a problem, but that doesn't mean the Xanax is the right med for you.  Don't know if you've taken it before, but some meds just don't mix with some people.  Xanax certainly didn't mix with me very well, made me more anxious, and just plain weird.  But it also sounds as if you're creating a lot of angst over this and that can overcome medication, which only treats symptoms and not causes.  I had a similar experience with imipramine -- it worked to a point until I had a bad breakup, and it just stopped working.
