Nortripyline

I started taking this med at the beginning of last December. (after a small stroke) I take it at night with 50mg of trazodone. About every morning since I have this feeling of internal weakness and internal shakes. It's a horrible feeling. I've drop down from 25 mgs to only 10mgs but feel the same. I don't know what's going on but I really don't feel good at all. Anyone know about Nortripyline and what about Lexipro? i know meds are the perfect way to go but I've run the gambit with Psych docs, Neurologists and others. Had a serious panic attack last night and have had recent severe dizziness.

Thanks for the reply Ruby. Well my story is long and it involves addiction. Coming out of detox I was prescribe Neurontin 2400 mgs a day. Along with the Trazodone 150 mgs a day. Both of these meds bothered me from the beginning So with my doctor we tapered down after a few months. That was start of September last. End of November I had the small stroke. That's when I was given Nortripyline 25 mg. Of course I was scared after having my second stroke I just went along with the doctors orders. Complaining often though. Yes all the tapering down was done under doctors care. After taking Xanax for 14 years I started to abuse them after an early retirement. I no longer take them although I still suffer from terrible anxiety. The reason why I have been given all the non-narcotic medications. Oh and I've just recently had a open partial Nephrectomy after a cancer diagnosis. So right at the moment I have a lot of anxiety going on. I thank you again Ruby and will keep you posted....ike

Did you start taking the trazodone and the nortryptyline at the same time? Was just wondering how you know it's the nortryptyline causing these symptoms............

Since you began having these very uncomfortable side effects immediately, and they did not abate in a week or two, why didn't you let your doctor know? To suffer with, as you put it, "horrible feelings" for almost 7 months must be terrible!

Some people have trouble with the tricyclic antidepressants and other's have problems with the SSRI's or SNRI's and are often switched. That you are on nortriptyline, which is a tricyclic and trazodone, which is an SNRI COULD be contributing to your problem. I hope when you decreased your dose of nortriptyline from 25mg to 10mg, it was under the advice of your doctor.

Lexapro is in the SSRI class of antidepressants and I can't say if it would be a better choice for you or not.

For those of us who are or have been on AD's, we have learned, often the long and hard way, that we sometimes have to try several, if not many, to find the one that works best for us with the fewest side effects and the highest efficacy. The watchword with AD's is PATIENCE.

You really need to sit down and discuss your meds with your doctor. The side effects you are experiencing are NOT acceptable after 7 months!

I was on Zoloft for over a year and from day one I had dry mouth and that never went away.......and while it was a "nuisance side effect," I learned to live with it easily...........but it was a long way from being the "horrible feeling" YOU are dealing with daily.

Who is prescribing these medications for you? If it is your PCP, you might want to consider consulting with a PMM. (Psychiatric Medication Manager)  After 7 months you should definitely have begun to feel better, but it seems you've been stuck in the same place since this all began and that's not right.

It can be very frustrating finding the right med or the right combination of meds, but again I stress the word patience when talking AD's.

Your final sentence has me concerned. Have you had panic attacks before or ever been diagnosed with anxiety? But it is the RECENT SEVERE DIZZINESS that raises the red flag for me.

I would strongly urge you to see your doctor sooner rather than later and if he wants to keep to the current plan, I would definitely consider getting a second opinion.

I hope you get this resolved quickly and keep us updated.
