Panic When Driving

Hi. I am 21 and have Panic Attacks whilst driving. It mainly occurs at nighttime. I feel like everything is tight and i'm almost fighting for breath and to keep my heart from racing too much. I cannot stop it. My doctor put me on beta blockers, i've been on them for months and they don't seem to help. I don't travel in a car much anymore, and I would love to be able to again. What can I do? I've tried driving more to fight it but it never works. It's uncontrollable - could it be hormonal, due to a higher stress situation and my body cannot cope? I am not depressed at all. Please help.

It sounds like you either need an increase in your medication dosage or a new medication.  Do you take anything else for your anxiety?  Most of us take an antidepressant and an anxiety medication.  Call your prescribing doctor and let him/her know the medication isn't working, there's no reason for anyone to suffer with panic attacks with all the medications out there to control them.  Always let your doctor know when something isn't working for you, he needs and wants to know. Panic attacks while driving are very common and can be controlled with the right medication. Hope this helps, and take care.
