Sleeping a Lot

Hi. I have anxiety disorder and right now a hyperactive thyroid. Lately all I do is sleep. I wake up at 7 am, eat and go back to sleep until 11am. Then I get up for an hour or two, eat and go have another nap from 1-3 pm.
Then I stay awake all night.
I have just quit smoking too and was sleeping a lot the first 3 days but that was last week, I would have thought the smoking was no longer the cause.

I am not generally upset or depressed, although I am a bit bored being at home alone all day. I am off right now wiating for thyroid surgery.
I am worried about going back to work part time, which I can do the doctor said, but I am worried about waking up early enough to get to work.
I don't know, maybe I'm jsut stressed, but I am sleeping so miuch.
I will mention it to the doctor. What could this poossibly be besides depression?

No, just a partial thyroidectomy of the right side to take out the mass.
On March 21st I saw the specialist and he said my thyroid was acutely hyperactive something I think TSH was <0.05 . Anyway he referred me to the surgeon and we have not heard since. That's 2 months!
I've asked the endo to check and I've asked my family doctor's office to check and they both are getting no response from the surgeon. The endo says it's typical not to hear back for 3 months as she is the best in that hospital......
Sheesh, if it's acute, how can I wait that long?? Then again I've already waited 2 months!! They also had anti-thyroid medication they could have given me and we tried it for 1 day but I broke out in hives, so now I am untreated as well. With the anti-thyroid meds I could have at least had the thyroid back to normal functioning.....

Well, tomorrow I am going to make an effort to get up early, around 7:00 am and not go back to sleep at all. I will go out if I have to or go sit in the back years or something.
Then later I have to go to the doctor anyway.....

Without a doubt...this appears to be behavioral...and while it may not be the end of the world to have your sleeping schedule all a-muck..it isn't good for your physical OR emotional health.  What you're essentially doing is throwing everything out of whack with these changes.

Like you said...the day you spent in the backyard...you didn't nap all day...and I would venture a guess that you prolly slept well that night huh?  Well...then that's the kind of stuff you need to be doing.

My sister had a total thyroidectomy a few years ago (she had a HUGE mass)...and she worked FT, no change in her schedule or habits prior to surgery.  Especially since your doc says it's okay...try to stick with the most "normal" schedule you can...plus you may need some time off AFTER the surgery...so working now makes perfect sense.  Plus, the better shape you're in before surgery...the smoother your recovery will be. You are possibly weakening yourself...deconditioning bascially by creating such a HUGE decrease in your activity level.  Just not a good thing.

You can double check with your doc...to be sure that there isn't some type of deficiency...but I'd bet money that there isn't.  Because if there was enough of an imbalance causing you to sleep that much...you would most likely not be able to tolerate a whole day in the backyard due to fatigue.....not to mention you'd likely have other symptoms as well.  What worries me...is...if you keep up these habits....you WILL being to be fatigued and weaker.

Consult with your doc about this...ask exactly about what type of activity level he wants you to have....that way you'll feel confident at what you're doing...and work at nipping this in the bud before it gets worse.  Ok?

Good luck...let us know what the doc says!!!  When is your surgery?  Are they just removing the mass, or your entire thyroid?

I think you're right, I think it is boredom if I really ackowledge it. Also the anxiety is not helping. I quit smoking to help me with my thyroid and diabets. But I quit at a time when I am actively having panic attacks and am home form work on sick leave because of the thyroid and anxiety. Oh well, better to deal with it at home than having to work each day too!
I am bored. Defininetly. Nothing to do allday. I do little chores, but it doesn't take much time to do groceries or put in the alundry ot tidy up the house.

I lie down on the couch to mediate and do relaxation exercises and that is usually when I fall asleep.
No problem sleeping at night though
I agree about the boredom because on Monday whewn I decided ot take off the pool cover I was in the bakc yard all day and did not nap once.
Last Saturday when we were up at the cottage I was outdoors doing the garden all day and did not nap once.

I think it is psychological and anxiety related!

thanks everyone fro the great responses! I just got up from another nap 1-3:30 this time! MY gosh all I've done is sleep today!
No, this is not insomnia, I sleep at night as well from 10pm-7:30is in the morning. Then I get up, eat breakfast and a chore or two and then nap again, eat lunch, do another chore and nap again.

I am going to ask the doctor about it being the size of my growth it's 4.6x2x2.3. I feel like I sleep at night, but lightly. I hear every noise but then I always have.
My thyroid surgery is not schedule yet we are waiting on the surgeon. It is to remove 1/2 the thyroid, the side with the growth.

I quit smoking 2 weeks ago, I slept the entire first 3 days, only opening my eyes and getting off the couch to use the washroom. But since then I've been ok and active and then a few days agao boom it hit me agian!
I also thought maybe a vitamin deficiency?

What type of thyroid surgery are you scheduled for ??

I have an enlarged thyroid, 5.5 x 3.5 mass.  Since the development of my thyroid, I've had all types of symptoms, from anxiety to insomnia, to sleeping too much.  But all my blood work reveals a normal working thyroid.

I am tired and sleep all the time, my schedule is similar to the one you shared.  Some nights I fall asleep at a normal hour, some nights I'm awake all night.

My cardiologist diagnosed my thyroid is causing obstruction to my airway, causing me difficulty breathing during sleep (sleep apnea), so I have a sleep study scheduled July 08.

Also when I quit smoking Feb 06, my sleep pattern was irratic for a few weeks, I couldn't sleep, I was used to smoking all the time to help me relax, and sleep.  So I was prescribed Klonopin to help me sleep.  Insomnia does occur once a person quits smoking, my insomnia lasted for around 2 months, until I visit my doctor.  So, yes after you quit smoking you can have prolonged insomnia.

Not that it is NOT related to your condition...but I also think a lot of it may be sort of a habit you've gotten into.....and whether or not it is related to some underlying depression...well, that would be best discussed with your doc.  It could be.

Until you see your doc...why don't you start making some changes?  First of all...to sleep all day and be up all night is ALL bad for your system, your mental well being, etc etc.  It's just not a good habit to get into.  Insomnia is one thing...but it sounds more like a rut you've gotten in.

Some suggestions.....get out and do some walking...at least once a day, if not more....do this during the times you would normally "nap" or feel tired.  You may have to push a little bit through the fatigue feeling you've prolly grown accustomed to...but it will not take too long to do that.

Do whatever you can to avoid sleeping during the day.  Then, when bedtime comes...take a nice hot bath (with lavendar scented pils/soaps if you can get them), do something soothing...like listen to some relaxing music, etc....do some deep stretches...maybe drink a cup of hot decaf tea.....then get into bed.  Lie in bed till you fall asleep.  I bet you that if you puch past the daily naps...by night time....you'll be pretty whooped.....being that you haven't gotten the sleep you've been used to.

Avouid caffeine as much as you can.....especially after lunchtime.  Morning java shouldn't hurt too much, in moderation.  Don't eat a heavy meal late at night...that will also interfere with restlful sleep.  Drink a lot of water during the day as well (not too late so that you're not taking 10 trips to the BR!  LOL).  The more you get out and stay active...with walking...whatever, the more tired you'll get.  Also...I cannot see any reason, if your doc gave you the "go ahead" why you cannot continue to work until your surgery..that will keep you in your routine and out of this temptation to sleep during the day.

Good luck to you....see how it works.  Talk to your doc about it...but I'd be willing to bet it's more behavioral than anything!

Are you sleeping because you are tired, or because you are bored? At the beginning of my anxiety all I did was sleep too. Id get up, get the kids off to school and go back to bed until it was time to pick them up. I guess I wasn't really tired, but just scared to do anything else because of my anxiety. I got to a point where I just wanted my life back, so I forced myself, no matter how tired or ill I thought I was, to get up and go do something. A short trip to the store, or post office, or even sometimes the car wash(that way I didn't have to see anyone). Now that its springtime I really enjoy my flowers. I have a flower garden in the front of my house and I spend a few hours out there everyday, pulling weeds, watering, etc.

Start small, but get out and do something. Or play a game on line, that also helped me. But try your hardest not to stay awake at night! Thats a hard thing I know, I was guilty of that also.

As far as it being something else, you have the right idea, ask your doctor about it. Good luck and keep us posted
