Waking up dizzy and panic immediately can it be sleep apnea

Occasionally I wake up suddenly in a panic, dizzy and gasping. Have thought it was from bad allergies, sinus, since sometimes I feel that way to a lesser degree during the day as well.  Have been tested and have very bad allergies. If I sleep with less than three pillows, it occurs more often. Could this possibly be sleep apnea instead. Definitely calling my doctor and making an appointment. Years ago I was diagnosed with anxiety and have awakened from an anxiety attack with these same feelings.  It gets very confusing as to what is going on. In the past have had sleep studies and not been told that I need a cpap This waking up issue started about four months ago with a bad attack of vertigo that took several days to slowly go away. Have never been quite the same since. Can sleep apnea possibly be a factor?

I would definitely re-visit the sleep apnea as it can cause the symptoms you describe.  Unfortunately, we have to start ruling out all other causes before assuming it's anxiety.  This may also be a "night terror".  Talk to your doctor and go from there and ask if any of your medications are causing these side effects.  Take care.

Hi there,

Isn't it frustrating trying to cope with symptoms while also trying to figure out what is causing them???

From what I read, you have an allergist.  I didn't see if you are taking medications/nasal sprays or exactly how you are dealing with chronic and acute sinusitis.  Three pillows for sleep are a familiar technique for all of us with sinus problems:).

It appears your current state of anxiety arose from a trauma: the vertigo.
Was it a 'the room is spinning' sensation?  Or a 'I'm a little off kilter and need to hold on to something' sensation?

You will see your doctor to determine if sleep apnea could be the culprit.  It was not when you were in a sleep study in the past, as you mentioned

As you were diagnosed with anxiety,  I suspect your doctor will want to address this once more.

I'm responding to your post as I have great sympathy for anyone suffering from both allergies/sinusitis and anxiety...conditions I've lived with for many years.

Best...
